The latest DLC character for Injustice 2 has an all-new gameplay trailer for fighting game and comic book fans to check out. Hellboy, the Right Hand of Doom himself, will be joining Injustice 2’s roster starting November 14. The trailer, like those for previous DLC characters, shows off Hellboy’s move-set, including his super move that quite literally takes his enemy straight to hell.

Hellboy is unique among the cast of Injustice 2, being the only character that isn’t wholly owned by DC Comics (beyond NetherRealm’s own Mortal Kombat characters). The demon spawn is one of publisher Dark Horse Comics’ most iconic characters, contracted out for his first video game appearance since 2004’s Hellboy: The Science of Evil movie spin-off. Hellboy is known as somewhat of a supernatural detective, a half-demon raised by the USA’s army, now working for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Both Hellboy’s work and his mysterious heritage naturally lead to unnatural adventures, which now include a role in a DC-based fighting game.

NetherRealm has remained as faithful as it could to the Hellboy source material, providing Hellboy with his giant stone “Right Hand of Doom,” trenchcoat, and trusty revolver. His super, when activated, will also bring forth his firey phantom horns and crown, which are significant visual cues tied to events in the comic. As with all of Injustice 2’s roster, NetherRealm has gone to great effort to bring Hellboy off of the page and into the game.

Hellboy comic and fighting game fans are not without their criticisms, however. Attentive viewers of the trailer will note what the fuss is about immediately. Hellboy is at times referred to as the Right Hand of Doom, yet throughout the Hellboy trailer his giant stone right hand becomes his giant stone left hand. Not only are Hellboy’s animations mirrored when he’s on the left side of the screen as opposed to the right, but certain actions like throws or shooting the revolver also switch the character’s hands.

The issue is that Hellboy is a visually asymmetric character: Hellboy’s right side is different from his left. But NetherRealm’s animation techniques treat all characters as symmetric, something players may never have noticed since the game’s full roster is symmetric too. With Hellboy, the inner workings at NetherRealm are brought into the spotlight. We see precisely how NetherRealm designs its animations to bring the action to the foreground, while also avoiding doubling the animation work requirements.

As far as criticism and controversy go, Hellboy’s symmetry is hardly a big deal. He still looks like a lot of fun, not to mention how well he represents his comic origins. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if NetherRealm responds or does any additional work on Hellboy’s animations as a result. They have got to keep fans happy with the reveal of DLC Fighter Pack 3 forthcoming in the months ahead.

Injustice 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Hellboy, the final addition in Fighter Pack 3, will be available for download November 14.
