The iPhone 14 might be able to skip a processor generation in 2022, boosting the device’s speed while at the same time extending battery life. Improvements of this kind are common but by jumping to the next advance, the future iPhone 14 chip, most likely named the Apple A16, might have a more significant leap in performance and efficiency.

The current iPhone 13 is, of course, faster than the iPhone 12 and that is one of the most satisfying things about technology. It keeps getting better every year, while generally remaining about the same price. The biggest benefits that came to the new iPhone in 2021 were camera upgrades and improved screen technology which enabled much longer battery life in the Pro models. The A15 processor is faster but not as much as the boost seen in 2020.

TSMC manufactures iPhone chips for Apple and Digitimes reported that the TSMC announced during an investor meeting that its 3-nanometer process was on schedule for volume production in the second half of 2022. This is exciting news because it was unclear before whether this reduction in scale would be ready or if it would be the 4-nanometer node that would be in use for mass-production next year. The difference between the two is greater than it may seem and if the iPhone 14 gets an A16 processor at a 3-nanometer scale it might enable enhanced features such as Cinematic mode video at 4K resolution, which is currently limited to 1080p.

How Much Faster Would a 3nm A16 iPhone 14 be?

Compared to the A15 processor used in the iPhone 13, 4-nanometer offers a minimal speed increase, while 3-nanometer delivers up to 15-percent better performance simply due to the reduction in the size of the components. Add to that Apple’s refinements and the iPhone 14 should have the power to deliver more realistic augmented reality and gaming, something that could prove critical to the rumored AR glasses, which might rely on the iPhone for much of its processing to keep the device compact and lightweight.

While a 3-nanometer chip is inherently faster since the electrons travel a shorter distance through the super dense circuitry, it also requires less power. Efficiency is expected to increase by as much as 30 percent. The iPhone 13 already has impressive battery life improvements and the iPhone 14 could set new records, lasting nearly a third longer when fully charged. Neither Apple nor TSMC have confirmed that the iPhone 14 will use a 3-nanometer chip, however, Apple usually chooses the best and fastest available.
