Ja Rule Made A Big Mistake Turning Down The Fast & Furious Sequels

Ja Rule was offered a chance to be part of The Fast And The Furious sequels after his cameo in the original, but turning down the franchise turned out to be a mistake. The Fast And The Furious series debuted in 2001, with the original film being based on a magazine article about street racing. It made stars out of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Paul Walker, but it’s path to becoming one of the biggest franchises in the world was a twisty one. Diesel passed on 2 Fast 2 Furious with only Walker returning, while the third movie Tokyo Drift focused on a new main character.

It looked like the series was winding down but a brief cameo from Diesel during The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift’s ending got fans excited again. The main cast from the original reunited for 2009’s Fast & Furious, which was a big enough hit for Fast Five to pivot to a new genre entirely. The fifth movie was a huge success and introduced Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs, which revitalized his career. The series seems to get more popular with each entry, while the stunts get more and more outlandish. Johnson received his own spinoff with 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw, while the upcoming F9 will be the next chapter in the main saga.

The franchise is pretty good about bringing back major or minor characters, but some, like Johnny Strong’s Leon from The Fast And The Furious, only appeared in one entry. The same applies to Edwin, a cocky street racer who appeared in the original movie and was played by rapper Ja Rule. Edwin takes part in a street race with Dom and Brian but despite his bragging, he’s easily defeated.

Edwin has yet to reappear in the series but director John Singleton wanted to bring the character back for a much bigger role in 2 Fast 2 Furious. The director explained to Grantland in 2015 that despite being offered a lead role and $500,000, Rule didn’t return calls about the project and essentially blew off the idea during an eventual meeting with Singleton. The rapper also explained at the time he wanted to take more serious acting roles, with 2 Fast 2 Furious not applying.

Ja Rule would end up appearing in the likes of Half Past Dead with Steven Seagal and he played a supporting role in the 2005 remake of Assault On Precinct 13. Edwin’s planned role in 2 Fast 2 Furious was rewritten to become Tej, played by Ludacris. Tej would eventually become a major supporting player and has returned for every main entry since Fast Five. While in hindsight Ja Rule passing on The Fast And The Furious sequels was a mistake, there was no way of foreseeing just how successful they would become either; that said, he probably wishes he’d said yes.
