Jared Leto Compares His The Little Things Character To The Joker

Jared Leto’s take on the Joker in Suicide Squad may strike viewers as a one-of-a-kind performance, but the actor says his latest role shares some similarities with the character. Leto took up the Joker mantle in David Ayer’s 2016 action movie about the origin stories of a team of supervillains from the DC comics. A soft reboot of the film is on the way from director James Gunn.

The DCEU film also stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Deadshot, both members of a group of convicted villains who have been offered a deal to work as government spies in exchange for reduced prison time. Both Suicide Squad and Leto’s performance in it elicited polarizing reactions even before their release. Leto’s unhinged portrayal of the Joker as a petulant punk stoked controversy for its inconsistency with the character’s canonical personality traits. His appearance was also criticized due to costuming choices that appeared to draw inspiration from fashions popular among modern-day mumble rappers, although Leto can hardly be blamed for the slightly cringe-worthy attempt to connect with youth culture. It’s worth noting that many of the actor’s scenes were cut, resulting in a final product that was likely much different from what Leto had envisioned as an actor but ultimately out of his control.

Speaking with Variety, Leto says his latest role provided a similar opportunity to take creative liberties with his performance. The actor stars alongside Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Sofia Vassilieva in the upcoming neo-noir thriller The Little Things, written and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Rookie, The Blind Side). Leto plays Albert Sparma, the suspect in the psychological crime drama, which is set in L.A. and will premiere in late January. He says playing Sparma allowed him creative freedom to make bold acting choices, as did depicting the Joker. Leto describes his character in The Little Things as having a chaotic energy much like Batman’s mad genius antagonist:

There are very few characters that you play that have absolutely no rules, you know, that you could just go to town. Sparma reminds me a little bit of that character as well in that he’s just a little outside the box. He’s someone who says everything that he thinks, basically. And he always is surprising. He’s very playful. And I found him actually quite funny as well…He could be a good guy or a bad guy, but he’s a fun guy!

The Joker is guided by a personal philosophy of chaos and disillusionment that has allowed actors including Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Joaquin Phoenix to let loose with their performances as the villain. Leto has previously taken on challenging roles in movies like Requiem for a Dream and Dallas Buyers Club, and although his Joker received criticism, the actor clearly has the chops to deliver a compelling performance.

Leto has previously expressed disappointment that many of his Suicide Squad scenes were cut due to fans’ reception of the trailer. Fairly enough, the committed actor was looking forward to joining a lineage of great artists who have interpreted the complex character onscreen. Unfortunately, he was robbed of the opportunity to do so when his version was relegated to a supporting role. Although most critics slammed Leto’s Joker, there’s no denying the actor has already proven his skills in previous roles. Hopefully, this latest role will better showcase his abilities.
