Jason Statham Has Update On Hobbs And Shaws Fast And Furious Future

Although there was some resistance from the mainline cast for supposedly breaking up the family, the Fast and Furious franchise’s first spin-off, Hobbs and Shaw, was a huge box office success back in 2019. Unsurprisingly, Universal started work on a sequel shortly after its release. Recently, Jason Statham has been doing the press rounds for Wrath of Man, his latest collaboration with director Guy Ritchie. When asked about the current progress with Hobbs and Shaw 2, Statham said he and Dwayne Johnson are essentially just waiting for the script to be finalized.

While it has already been announced that a Hobbs and Shaw sequel is in development, Statham told Collider, “Hundreds of millions get spent on making the movie and promoting the movie, so they have to have a good script. We’re motivated to do something about that; we’re waiting for the knock on the door, essentially.” Getting the script right is crucial to big blockbusters like this – it’s much easier to fix story problems at the script stage than months into production when tens of millions of dollars have been spent to create scenes that ultimately don’t work.

Initially introduced as Han’s killer in the post-credits scene of Fast and Furious 6, Statham’s Deckard Shaw character quickly became a fan-favorite as the main villain of Furious 7 and then as a comic foil for Johnson’s Luke Hobbs character in The Fate of the Furious. Although Fast fans had a tough time forgiving the character who killed Han, Shaw was an anti-hero who’d been integrated into Dom Toretto’s surrogate family. Plus, F9 is revealing that Han is alive, so Shaw didn’t really kill him – it’s easier to forgive something that didn’t happen.

Universal has confirmed that back-to-back sequels Fast and Furious 10 and Fast and Furious 11 will definitively conclude the newly branded The Fast Saga. Although Johnson and Statham had to sit out F9 to shoot Hobbs and Shaw, the door is open for the characters to return to the main series in this two-part finale. Statham spoke about the possibility of returning for the final two movies: “I’d love to come back for those couple of movies… It’s great to work with Vin [Diesel] and all the other characters – I’ve made some great friends on that movie – and I really love the film franchise itself… To be a part of it is just a great privilege. So, if they want me in the next ones, I’ll be there.”

Director Justin Lin, who is returning to the Fast franchise for F9 and the two-part finale, recently gave a cryptic response when asked if Hobbs and Shaw would come back to the mainline series, simply saying that he’d be willing to revisit any characters. Statham told Collider that he knows Lin well and that he and the director are “destined to do something bigger” in the Fast and Furious franchise than his initial post-credits cameo.

Statham’s action thriller Wrath of Man is due to be released on May 7. There’s no confirmed release date for Hobbs and Shaw 2, but in the meantime, Statham is shooting a sequel to The Meg with director Ben Wheatley.

Fast and Furious 9 is set to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2021.
