Jerry Stillers 10 Best Movies According To IMDb

The passing of Jerry Stiller marked the end of an era. The actor was one of those actors who somehow managed to infuse even his more curmudgeonly roles with a certain charisma and likeability that was all his own. Though he probably reached his greatest fame in the 1990s and 2000s, when he played in both Seinfeld and The King of Queens, before his notable roles as Frank Costanza and Arthur Spooner he’d already accrued quite a few acting credits and had shown considerable talent in film.

While not every film he starred in was a notable success, there’s no question that he left a huge mark on the world of comedy. Here are his 10 best movies, according to scores on IMDb.

10 Those Lips, Those Eyes (1980) – 6.4

Those Lips, Those Eyes is one of those films from the 1980s that has somehow managed to not attain the canonical status of many other films from that era. Perhaps that’s because it’s a light-hearted romantic comedy.

Whatever the case, it’s still worth a rewatch, in large part because it’s just such a sweet film that it’s hard to dislike. Stiller, unsurprisingly, plays the rather harsh father of the main character, a role he plays with aplomb.

9 Zoolander (2001) – 6.5

Zoolander is a peak 2000s comedy. Directed by and starring Ben Stiller, it’s one of the funniest movies to have come out of 2001, in large part because Stiller knows how to play the role of the self-centered and rather dim main character to the hilt.

What’s more, he had the wisdom to cast his own father in the role of Maury Ballstein, Derek Zoolander’s agent. There’s something uniquely charming about seeing the father and son acting in the same film, their considerable talents bouncing off of one another.

8 Hairspray (2007) – 6.6

This film, which is based on the musical of the same name (which is, in turn, based on a film by John Waters), is as fun and frothy as the stage musical.

Stiller only has a small part in it, as the owner of a clothing store that sells to plus-sized women, but it’s always a pleasure to see him on the screen, even if it is just for a matter of moments.

7 Heavyweights (1995) – 6.7

Zoolander wasn’t the first time that Jerry and Ben Stiller had starred in the same film since they also appeared together in this 1990s comedy. It’s a funny enough movie, in large part because it’s seemingly impossible to dislike Ben Stiller, but it is definitely one of those films that could only have been made in the 1990s.

Once again, Jerry Stiller has only a bit part, as one of the two original owners of a summer camp.

6 The Ritz (1976) – 6.9

Who doesn’t love a good farce? That’s exactly what one gets with this 1970s film, based on the Broadway play of the same name. Set in a gay bathhouse, it is as ludicrous and slapstick as one might expect.

While there are some glitches in the translation from stage to screen, there’s no question that the cast, including Stiller, are uniformly excellent (and, as an added bonus, many of them were also in the Broadway production).

5 Hairspray (1988) – 6.9

John Waters is primarily known for producing films that are, to put it mildly, offensive. However, every so often he makes one that has less of a bite, and that is the case with Hairspray.

Its story about Tracy Turnblad, a teenager who wants to become a dancer and in the process fights against racism, is definitely charming. Stiller here plays Tracy’s father, a funny and supportive man, and it’s nice to see him play someone who isn’t a curmudgeon.

4 Bitter Jester (2003) – 7.0

Though Stiller is primarily known for his appearances in comedy films and television, there have been a few times where he also appeared in documentaries, including Bitter Jester.

The film is an exploration of the world of comedy, so it would make sense that it would feature an interview with Stiller, who has long been regarded as a terrific comedy talent (along with his wife, of course). The film is worth watching for his insightful comments alone.

3 Deli Man (2014) – 7.0

One of the best things about documentaries is that they can often shine a light into aspects of American culture that all too often go unexplored. That is certainly the case with this film which, as the title suggests, looks at the importance of the deli, not just in terms of what food it provides, but also for the cultural function it serves.

Jerry Stiller is just one of several important figures who testify to their love of the deli.

2 The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three (1974) – 7.7

Obviously, most of Stiller’s screen credits lie firmly in the comedy category, but The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is a bit of an outlier.

It is, of course, an action thriller film of the sort that was very popular in the 1970s (and to an extent in the 1980s). Stiller has a very small part as a detective caught on a subway car whose riders are taken hostage. It was and is highly regarded by both fans and audiences alike.

1 Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley (2013) – 8.0

This highly-regarded documentary from HBO examines the life, work, and influence of the African American comedian Moms Mabley.

Once again, Jerry Stiller is himself, and his observations about both Mabley and about comedy more generally are a valuable reminder of the key role that comedy (and comedians) have played in American culture throughout the 20th century. The documentary itself was very well-produced and is an insightful examination of this very important comedy figure.
