Judge Dredds Stallone & Urban Movie Versions Meet in 2000 AD Crossover

Spoiler warning: contains preview of Christmas edition of 2000 A.D.

Christmas is about to come early for die-hard fans of the Judge Dredd character, both as he appears in the comics and in the movies. Rebellion’s 2000 A.D. magazine will be releasing a special holiday issue where both cinematic versions of Judge Dredd as played by Sylvester Stallone and Karl Urban will be meeting face-to-face for the first time ever.

The world of Mega-City One first debuted on the big screen in 1995 when Sylvester Stallone played the title character in live-action form for Judge Dredd. Despite criticisms from fans that the movie was not as entirely faithful as it could have been and despite casual moviegoers thinking Judge Dredd was too silly for its own good, the movie has become something of a cult classic in recent memory. Still, despite a strong box office outing, the bad reviews were enough to kill any plans for a sequel. Meanwhile, 2012’s Dredd starring Karl Urban in the lead this time, ran into the complete opposite problem. Although the movie received generally positive reviews from fans and critics, box office returns were poor enough to shut down any sequel plans.

Now the two cinematic interpretations of the character will come together in the pages of 2000 A.D., as was first reported by IGN. The meeting will serve as an 11-page crossover event. The two live-action versions of Stallone and Urban won’t be alone either, as the two will be meeting and working alongside the current comic book version of Judge Dredd. Much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming Spider-Man: Far from Home, Dredd and his own universe will be playing around with the concept of multiverse theory. The story in question will be written by Ken Niemand with artwork from Richard Elson.

It’s certainly an ambitious concept to introduce into the lore of a comic book universe, let alone the action-driven yet bitingly satirical world of Judge Dredd. However, the multiverse theory is a hot enough concept right now to spark the interest of just about everyone in the comic book industry, and subsequently in comic book-adjacent properties like superhero movies. Given how popular multiversal crossovers are in media these days, this event could be enough to help renew a brand new worldwide interest in the Judge Dredd character, particularly for his future of returning to live-action movies.

The last time that audiences heard even the slightest rumor of another live-action adaptation was one suggesting that Karl Urban could reprise his role in a supposed TV show called Judge Dredd: Mega-City One. Such rumors were last reported back in 2017, so it would be an understatement to say that the Dredd fandom has been stagnant for a while. A crossover like this could be just enough to create a new interest in the character from comic fans and movie fans alike, thus renewing hope of a new live-action adaptation on the horizon. And if not, then Judge Dredd fans can nonetheless look forward to seeing Sylvester Stallone and Karl Urban share a panel with their comic book inspiration. The Christmas edition of 2000 A.D. will be available for subscribers on December 11th and for individual purchase and via the 2000 AD app starting on December 16th.
