Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Ends Hiatus Returning in August

The fan-favorite manga Jujutsu Kaisen is returning to the shelves this August after it was announced earlier this summer the series would be going on a hiatus. The Japanese manga magazine and publisher of Jujutsu Kaisen, Weekly Shonen Jump, made the announcement earlier this month followed by a tweet from the editorial team saying the serialization of the manga would resume. While fans met this news with gratitude and excitement, they also took to Twitter to offer concern and understanding over why the publication went on hiatus in the first place.

Jujutsu Kaisen made its debut in March of 2018. The manga follows the life of a high school student, Yuji Itadori, whose life is changed after he joins his school’s Occult Club. The innocent high schoolers stumble upon a cursed object, the demonic finger of a corpse, and unwittingly summon demons upon their examination. In order to save his friends from a gruesome fate, Yuji swallows the finger and in doing so becomes possessed by a demon. Instead of being completely overcome by the evil that now inhabits his body, Yuji retains some control over himself, sparking the exciting horror manga fans fell in love with.

In June of this year, Jump announced Jujutsu Kaisen would go on a brief hiatus with the official reason behind it being because of concerns over the physical health of the creator of the series, Gege Akutami. No other details were provided in regard to the Jujutsu Kaisen creator’s condition other than a statement released by the creator himself in which he wrote, “Even if I say I’m feeling unwell, this isn’t a serious illness,” adding, “Mentally things are functioning as normal, so don’t worry.” Despite Akutami’s reluctance to take a break, the publisher insisted and thus the series took a short pause.

While the creator assured fans that overall he feels fine, that didn’t curb their collective concern for Akutami matched only by their excitement for the manga’s return. Upon reading the comments under Jump’s Tweet announcing Jujutsu Kaisen’s return, one Twitter user wrote, “I’m happy. Please be careful about your physical condition. As one of the fans, I will continue to support you. Welcome back.” Another fan of Jujutsu Kaisen wrote in part, “[T]he fans of this magazine’s development are thrilled, so please take a break regularly and don’t overdo it.”

Overall the Twitter thread was flooded with similar sentiments of fans offering their support and excitement for the series but also with understanding if another hiatus is necessary, with their main concern being Akutami’s health over Jujutsu Kaisen’s next chapter. Backed by the support of the fans and headlined by the willingness of the creator, Jujutsu Kaisen is back after its month-long break. Jujutsu Kaisen will appear in the Weekly Shonen Jump issue on sale August 2.
