The reviews are in for Just Cause 3, with the game praised for its over-the-top action, but criticized for repetitive missions as well as technical issues.

While most of 2015’s biggest games dropped in October and November, the fall gaming rush is not quite over just yet, and Just Cause 3 from Avalanche Studios is a testament to that. Now that the game is released, reviews from around the web have started pouring in, and generally speaking, Just Cause 3 is receiving a fairly positive reception.

According to critics, Just Cause 3 is chock-full of the over-the-top action that made its predecessors popular, and in that sense, it delivers. Critics are also pointing to the game’s Challenge Modes as a source of quality entertainment in Just Cause 3, along with the game’s massive open world, which has been fleshed out with random events and enhanced AI.

Unfortunately, Just Cause 3 appears to have some technical issues that are holding it back, as well as a repetitive mission structure and a weak story. Despite these flaws, most scores for the game are hovering around the 8/10 range, which is impressive.

Destructoid (Patrick Hancock)

“It truly is an insane, explosion-filled romp through a beautiful nation chock-full of cheeky humor. It provides some of the best open-world tools ever. This is definitely a case of ‘it is what you make of it,’ and for those with intrinsic motivation to make it the best will be greeted with just that.”

Score: 8/10

Game Informer (Jeff Cork)

“Avalanche does a good job of giving players access to new tools just as it seems the novelty is close to wearing off, right until the end. By the time I finished clearing out the final outpost, however, I was definitely ready to move on. Medici’s a great place to visit, but I’m not prepared to make it a new home – certainly not considering the state I left it in.”

Score: 8/10

GameSpot (Mike Mahardy)

“Despite the explosions and instant gratification throughout, Just Cause 3 also encourages experimentation and foresight, planning and careful approaches. The results are as rewarding as they are entertaining.”

Score: 8/10

GamesRadar+ (Phil Savage)

“Just Cause 3 feels less than the sum of its parts. There’s fun to be had, for sure, but it’s couched in a structure that’s filled with frustration and, worst of all, boredom. It offers 400 square miles of world to liberate, but fails to provide enough variety to keep things interesting for even a fraction of that space. What’s left is a lot of style, but very little substance.”

Score: 3/5

IGN (Dan Stapleton)

“Just Cause 3 is a playground where you get to be a physics-defying force of destruction, and its loop of liberating dozens of towns across this enormous scenic world would’ve gotten old much quicker if the combat wasn’t so full of options for free-form mayhem. Getting the most out of it requires some creativity and tolerance for performance bugs on your part, so come expecting to make at least some of your own fun.”

Score: 8/10

It’s important to note that a few of these reviews actually clarified that the game was reviewed on PC, as there’s apparently some significant performance differences between the PC version of the game and the console versions. Some outlets, such as IGN, are reporting that the console versions of Just Cause 3 suffer from longer load times, more bugs, and other problems. So it seems that consumers will need to keep more than resolution differences in mind when deciding if they should buy Just Cause 3 for PC or consoles.

Technical issues aside, Just Cause 3 is still likely to please fans of the first two games in the series. It seems like it delivers the explosive action as seen in its launch trailer, regardless of its flaws. While some may still be busy with other open world titles that have released this year, Just Cause 3 looks like it is at least worth considering for fans of the genre.

Just Cause 3 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
