Keira Knightley to Lead True Crime Movie About Boston Strangler

Keira Knightley is set to take on the leading role in 20th Century Studios’ Boston Strangler based on the 1960 Boston Strangler murders. Knightley has achieved global stardom since making her big screen debut in the late ’90s. She has starred in projects ranging from mega blockbusters like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to critically acclaimed films like 2005’s Pride & Prejudice, for which she also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

As reported by Deadline, Knightley has signed for the film currently titled Boston Strangler for 20th Century Studios and will team up with director Matt Ruskin. Ruskin was born and brought up in Boston and first made a name for himself with the 2017 film, Crown Heights, starring LaKeith Stanfield. Knightley will be playing Loretta McLaughlin, an investigative reporter who first broke the story of the Boston Strangler. The film will be produced by The Last Duel director Ridley Scott and Kevin Walsh of Scott Free Productions with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap Entertainment set to join as co-producers.

The story revolves around reporters McLaughlin and Jean Cole (a role yet to be cast), who first connected the murders and revealed the story of the infamous Strangler. They also played a major role in challenging the sexism that was prominent in the early 1960s. Director Matt Ruskin went as far as researching and seeking out the families of McLaughlin and Cole to really dig into their investigation that dates back to that time period. Given that fact, it would be safe to say that the film could be portraying an accurate depiction of the case in similar fashion to investigative journalism films of the past like Zodiac and Spotlight.

Keira Knightley is no stranger to taking part in biopic films after playing lead roles in the 2014 Oscar-nominated The Imitation Game and 2019’s Official Secrets, so to say that this is a good piece of casting would be an understatement. Before the famed English actress appears in Boston Strangler, she will be seen in the comedy film Silent Night and the animated film, Charlotte (where she voices the main character), which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
