King Richard’s cast and real life character comparison guide. Venus and Serena Williams’ names should be incredibly familiar to audiences by now; however, King Richard offers a slight twist in that it’s actually more about their father, Richard Williams, a tennis coach who tries to put his daughters’ talents on the world stage.
Set in the 1990s, King Richard primarily follows the eponymous characters in his goals to find a coach for Venus and Serena. By the start of the film, Richard has spent years coaching them while working night shifts as a security guard. His aim is to find a coach who will take his daughters under their wings to prepare them for getting to the professional league without costing him everything. Tennis is, after all, not cheap and the film makes that clear from the start. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, King Richard goes behind-the-scenes of Venus and Serena’s life under the guidance of their father.
King Richard has a sprawling cast of veteran actors and younger actors who get to flex their talents in front of a wider audience. Will Smith As Richard Williams
Richard Williams is Serena and Venus Williams’ father and tennis coach before hiring someone to pay for their lessons. He struggled for years to support his daughters and get them in front of coaches who would take them on in a bid to get to the professional tennis level. In King Richard, the eponymous character is played by Will Smith, who is famous for his roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Men in Black, I Am Legend, the Bad Boys franchise, Seven Pounds, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, Suicide Squad, and Independence Day, among several other films. Smith is also a well-known producer and his credits under this include The Karate Kid and the reimagined Bel-Air series coming to Peacock.
Aunjanue Ellis As Oracene “Brandy” Price
Oracene “Brandy” Price is a nurse, Richard Williams’ wife, and the mother of Venus and Serena Williams. She is played by Aunjanue Ellis in King Richard, an actress who is known best for her roles in HBO’s Lovecraft Country, When They See Us, Quantico, Ray, The Help, NCIS: Los Angeles, and the TV series Designated Survivor.
Saniyya Sidney As Venus Williams
Venus Williams is a world-renowned professional tennis player and former World No. 1 in singles and doubles. In King Richard, Venus is portrayed in her youth in the years leading up to going pro. She is played by actress Saniyya Sidney, who is most famous for roles in Denzel Washington’s Fences, Roots, Hidden Figures, American Horror Story, the short-lived TV series The Passage, and Fast Color. Sidney will next star alongside Viola Davis in The First Lady series, where she will portray Sasha Obama.
Demi Singleton As Serena Williams
Serena Williams is often regarded as the greatest female tennis player of all-time, having won more than 20 slams in her career, which is more than any other player in history. Like Venus, she is shown as early to mid-teens in King Richard, where she is portrayed by Demi Singleton. The actress is best known for roles in Goldie and Godfather of Harlem.
Jon Bernthal As Rick Macci
Rick Macci is a professional tennis coach who started the Rick Macci International Tennis Academy in 1985 in Florida, the location where Venus and Serena Williams go to train. Rick Macci is portrayed by Jon Bernthal, who is perhaps most famous for playing the titular role in Marvel Netflix’s The Punisher and Daredevil. But Bernthal has a pretty impressive resume that goes beyond comic book adaptations. He’s starred in The Wolf of Wall Street, The Walking Dead, Widows, Baby Driver, The Many Saints of Newark, The Accountant, Wind River, Sicario, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.

Tony Goldwyn As Paul Cohen – Paul Cohen is a top tennis coach in the United States. He coached the likes of John McEnroe and several other notable players. He’s the first coach Venus Williams has. He’s portrayed in King Richard by Tony Goldwyn, who has most notably starred in Scandal, Lovecraft Country, Ghost, The Mechanic, The Last Samurai, and Divergent. He also voiced the titular role in Disney’s animated Tarzan in 1999.
Mikayla LaShae Bartholomew as Tunde Price – Tunde Price is the oldest half-sister of Serena and Venus Williams. She is the eldest daughter of Brandy from another marriage. Mikayla LaShae Bartholomew has appeared in the short film Pure and guest starred in the TV series The Code.
Daniele Lawson as Isha Price – Isha is also Venus and Serena’s sister who goes on to become a lawyer. Daniele Lawson has guest starred in a plethora of TV shows, including Young Sheldon, Mixed-ish, Scandal, and 9-1-1.
Layla Crawford as Lyndrea Price – Lyndrea Price is Venus and Serena’s sister, the daughter of Orecene, and the stepdaughter of Richard Williams. Layla Crawford has been in The First Family TV series. Dylan McDermott as Will Hodges – Will Hodges is a sports agent in King Richard. Dylan McDermott is known for The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Practice, Olympus Has Fallen, American Horror Story, and Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood.
Marcela Zacarias as Arantxa Sanchez Vicario – Arantxa Sanchez Vicario is a former World No. 1 tennis player who competed against Venus Williams. She is played by Marcela Zacarias, who is a real-life tennis star. King Richard is her first film role.
Kevin Dunn as Vic Braden – Kevin Dunn appears as famed tennis player Vic Braden in King Richard. Dunn’s previous credits include Warriors, Transformers, Unstoppable, True Detective, Samantha Who?, and the TV series Veep.
