Paul Thomas Anderson is one of those directors that turns every cinephile’s head when he has a new project on the horizon, and that’s no different with the upcoming Licorice Pizza. There’s so much excitement surrounding the movie, as it’s been four years since Phantom Thread, Anderson’s last movie.

With each consecutive Anderson-directed release, there’s more and more secrecy surrounding the plot, the actors, the characters, and everything in between. Even though the movie will be released shortly, there are barely any leaked details about the film, not even a trailer. But the few known details about the movie are enough to get PTA fans excited.

10 The Lead Actor Is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Son

Paul Thomas Anderson worked with the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman on several occasions. They were as good as any director/actor duo in Hollywood, whether it’s David Fincher and Brad Pitt or Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro.

Hoffman starred in Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, and The Master, and he was even nominated for best actor for the latter. And although Hoffman, unfortunately, passed away in 2013, it looks like the collaboration will live on through his son, Cooper Hoffman. Licorice Pizza is Hoffman’s acting debut, and according to Vanity Fair, Anderson still cast him in the lead role.

9 It’s About A High School Student Becoming An Actor

Just as is the case with the lead-up to all P.T. Anderson-directed movies, very little is known about the plot of Licorice Pizza. However, some details about the plot have come to light.

In the same Indie Wire article mentioned above, the main narrative of the movie follows a high school student (Cooper Hoffman) with a dream of becoming an actor in Los Angeles. Anderson has a thing for developing characters who are child prodigies, as a section of his melodramatic epic, Magnolia, focused on a boy genius on a TV quiz show.

8 Jonny Greenwood Will Score The Movie

Anderson loves to collaborate with the same artists over and over again, whether it’s Philip Seymour Hoffman or the music composer, Jonny Greenwood. The musician was once predominantly known for being the bassist of Radiohead, but he’s now also a highly sought-after film composer. This is largely thanks to Anderson hiring him to compose the score for There Will Be Blood.

Greenwood has scored every Anderson-directed movie since then, and according to World of Reel, this collaboration will continue with Licorice Pizza. There is still no indication as to how the music will sound, as whether it’s the piano and string-focused score of Phantom Thread or the chaotic orchestral pieces of There Will Be Blood, Greenwood’s scores are all completely different entities.

7 Anderson Continues To Work With Musicians

There is a musical feeling to all of Anderson’s movies, as the films don’t have grounded narratives but instead drift around almost aimlessly to classic ’70s songs and Johnny Greenwood’s compositions. And that might be why he enjoys working with musicians. Fiona Apple had a big hand in Magnolia, as not only did her songs soundtrack some of the films, but her paintings and artwork are hung up around houses in the movie too.

The trust in musicians went even further in Inherent Vice, as Anderson cast harpist and singer Joanna Newsom in a major role and she even narrates the film. NME reports that Anderson has cast another musician in Licorice Pizza Alana Haim. The musician is a member of the band Haim, and she seemingly has a great relationship with the director, as he photographed the band’s latest album artwork and directed several of their music videos. But unsurprisingly, Haim’s role, as it stands, is unknown.

6 It Was Shot During The Pandemic

There have been many creative celebrities during the COVID pandemic, whether it was Sacha Baron Cohen seemingly making an off-the-cuff Borat sequel or Charlie Brooker’s Death in 2020.

Paul Thomas Anderson is no different, and though the movie was developed before the quarantine, according to Rock NYC, it went into production in the midst of it all. It was a tough task, especially for the studio, as it was facing much higher production costs, shoots took longer due to fewer hands on deck, and many safety precautions had to be taken.

5 It’s Set In The ’70s

Though it was shot during the pandemic, audiences aren’t going to be seeing any face masks in the movie, as, according to World of Reel, it’s a period drama based in the ’70s. It seems to be the director’s favorite decade, as most of Boogie Nights is based in 1979 and Inherent Vice is set in 1970.

Despite most of Anderson’s movies being emotionally exhausting, those two ’70s based movies feature a lot of comedy, and if that’s anything to go by, Licorice Pizza could be his funniest movie yet. And not only is the decade setting familiar to fans of the filmmaker, but just like Magnolia, the film is set in the San Fernando Valley. So fans could be seeing a spiritual successor to the 1999 epic.

4 Bradley Cooper Has A Main Role

Anderson’s past few movies have starred actors the director knows he is comfortable working with. He has worked with Daniel Day-Lewis twice, and the same goes for Joaquin Phoenix. So it comes as a surprise that Bradley Cooper, who has never worked with the director before, has a starring role.

Not only that, but Anderson has never worked with that much of a bankable movie star since Tom Cruise in 1999. IMDb confirmed that Cooper will be playing a movie director and producer, and though that’s all that is known about the character, there have been intriguing on-set photos of him covered in blood. However, Cooper’s role in the film might be reminiscent of another movie he starred in that took advantage of the decade of disco, David O’Russell’s American Hustle.

3 And So Does Benny Safdie

Benny Safdie is more of a director than he is an actor, as he co-directed two highly intense thrillers with his brother, Good Time and the Adam Sandler-led Uncut Gems. The two directors probably bonded over the fact that they both cast Sandler in roles that go against type, as Anderson directed the actor in Punch-Drunk Love too.

However, Safdie has acted in the past, as he played a thief with an intellectual disability in Good Time. And according to The Film Stage, he’ll be playing Joel Wachs, a real-life politician who ran for office in the ’70s. And given that Anderson is now meshing real-life people with fictional characters, it seems like he’s still pushing boundaries for himself.

2 John C. Reilly Was On Set

John C. Reilly’s best dramas Were largely directed by Anderson. The two go way back, as they worked together on Anderson’s first three movies. The Film Stage reported that the actor got a COVID test just so he could visit the set of Licorice Pizza. It could very well be that Reilly wanted to see his old friend, but it could also mean that he might have a small part in the movie or at least a cameo.

After all, there have been very few casting announcements even since the movie has wrapped. And with its release just being two months away, fans only know about a handful of actors who are in the film. So although it’s just speculation, an appearance from John C. Reilly is more than possible.

1 The Title’s Meaning

Anderson’s titles have always thrown people for a loop, especially when the premise is a mystery, as titles like The Master and Inherent Vice are meaningless without the full facts.

That’s no different with Licorice Pizza, and possibly even more so, as those two words together sound rather strange, to say the least. The original working title of the movie was Soggy Bottom, which refers to an under-cooked base of a pie that’s too moist, among other things, but how this meaning relates to a ’70s-based drama about politicians and child actors is a puzzle.
