The Buzz Lightyear movie, simply titled Lightyear, is the latest feature film from Pixar based around the Toy Story universe, although this installment to the franchise is quite different from the rest. The picture will be looking at the action hero Buzz Lightyear that inspired the creation of Andy’s toy; the Buzz audiences are now familiar with.

The film is sure to answer plenty of questions fans might have about the space ranger, from his origins to how he found such an iconic suit in the first place. The Buzz Lightyear movie is sure to live up to expectations as it takes audiences to infinity and beyond while paying homage to the original quadrilogy that began it all.

10 How Did He Join The Space Rangers?

The Buzz Lightyear movie is promising to explore some of the character’s backstory, including his time at Star Command. How did he actually join these space rangers in the first place though? Buzz clearly has a passion for serving justice as well as an inquiring mind.

His need for exploration and adventure might have driven him towards the Star Trek-inspired Star Command, although it is surely his sense of duty that led him to stay. Lightyear will hopefully shed some light on the situation and whether there was a single factor that led to his recruitment, or perhaps whether it was his heritage that inspired him.

9 Where Did He Get His Suit?

Fans have a lot of questions surrounding Lightyear, including whether the character will don his iconic suit. The latest trailers for the animated feature did reveal a very quick look at that well-known piece of equipment that the space ranger is famous for wearing.

The Buzz Lightyear movie should in theory answer the question of where he actually got his suit, therefore. It might be a piece of equipment given to most of Star Command, or maybe it’s a trophy picked up from a dangerous mission. It’s sure to be a thrilling tale whatever Pixar decides on the origins being.

8 What Is Buzz’s Mission?

Buzz Lightyear is clearly famous in this universe and is probably one of the best rangers that Star Command has ever seen. There has to be a reason for this though; did the astronaut complete a significantly impressive feat that has been celebrated across the organization?

Regardless of how he earned so much respect, the Buzz Lightyear movie will surely be able to tell audiences what his latest mission is. Toy Story fans are well aware that the explorer was looking for intelligent life on new worlds. Maybe the way he was first introduced to audiences links into his mission within Lightyear.

7 Can He Really Fly?

It’s become one of Buzz’s most iconic scenes; his attempt at flight. Of course, fans know that really all the space ranger can do is fall with style, even if that is an incredible feat unto itself. But will the Buzz Lightyear movie answer that all-important question? Can Buzz actually fly?

The assumption is that he should be able to. After all, the toy is convinced that he has the ability stored in his back pocket. The wings may act as gliders in reality, although that would be quite a disappointing reveal since audiences have been waiting for the toy to fly to infinity and beyond for so long.

6 Is Zurg Really His Father?

Star Command might have taken notes from Star Trek but it is Buzz’s familial twist that essentially parodied Star Wars. The revelation that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father is one of the most memorable film moments of all time. Buzz had to rival that.

Toy Story 2 shows audiences that the toy’s father is actually the evil Emperor Zurg. The two quickly learn to work through their disagreements through and end up playing catch with one another. Is Zurg actually Buzz’s father, or was this a quick joke that related more to the toy rather than the man behind the suit?

5 Who Is Buzz’s Mother?

Zurg might be Buzz’s mother, but the Buzz Lightyear movie will have to answer some more questions about the character’s heritage. Who was the adventurer’s mother? Was she someone significant within Star Command, setting up a Romeo And Juliet-esque romance?

Or perhaps she was someone who put a lot of faith in Buzz and his goals, inspiring him to become a great hero. It may even be that Buzz spent most of his life without a parental figure. No matter the answer, the storyline featuring his parentage is definitely going to be compelling and may give some insights into the man Buzz has evolved into.

4 What Is Zurg The Emperor Of?

The Emperor Zurg twist might have hilariously cemented Toy Story as one of the best animated features of all time due to its effortless humor and touching storytelling, but there’s a bigger question wrapped up in the reveal. What is Zurg actually the Emperor of?

Is the Empire the force of evil that Buzz Lightyear has sworn his life to defend against, or is Zurg simply the ruler of an inconsequential planet, with his importance subjected to a great deal of hyperbole for comedic effect? Lightyear will likely feature the father figure in some capacity.

3 Who Are Star Command?

Star Command has been alluded to repeatedly, but who actually are they? What do they stand for and what’s their key objective? Buzz is clearly a loyal member of the organization, representing them on whichever planet he ends up landing on.

Not much is actually known about the group outside of the animated show Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command which is out of canon now. It’s probably going to be a heroic force rather than a complex bureaucratic organization like Star Fleet, but maybe the Buzz Lightyear movie will see the titular character rise up the ranks.

2 What Do All Those Buttons Actually Do?

Andy loves all of his toys but the supposedly intelligent Buzz represented the shiny new plaything that boasted plenty of buttons, flashing lights, and fun sound effects. In reality, what do all of the buttons actually do? They probably don’t just shoot out catchphrases at the enemy.

A few of the buttons on Buzz’s suit have already been explained. One allows him to use his communications device, one fires up his laser beam and another deploys Lightyear’s wings. With so many other options available to him, what else can Buzz do with that suit?

1 Did Buzz Ever See His Own Movie?

Lightyear is said to be set within the Toy Story universe as the action film that inspired the creation of Buzz Lightyear the action figure. If that is the case then did Buzz ever get to actually witness his own film, or are his adventures unknown to him outside of what he read on the back of his box?

The Buzz Lightyear movie may feature a small cameo from the Toy Story crew as they get to watch the events of Lightyear unfold. It would be a fun moment to see Andy’s toys in the cinema experiencing the Star Command adventure on the big screen, while also confirming the original Buzz’s role in all of this.
