Lois Lane Came Closer to Killing Superman Than Most Of His Villains

As the love of Clark Kent’s life, nobody would ever expect Lois Lane to be a threat to the Man of Steel, but in one Elseworlds tale, she actually came closer to killing Superman than most of his villains ever do. As DC Comics’ greatest hero, Superman faces some of its most powerful threats. But it was his other half that nearly put him down.

All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely is one of Superman’s most beloved stories, and for good reason. Lois and Clark are one of comics’ most iconic love stories, but in issue #2 of the fan-favorite series, it very nearly met a tragic end. And it was pretty much Superman’s fault.

With a dying Superman’s final days fast approaching, the Man of Steel brings Lois Lane to his Fortress of Solitude after finally revealing his secret identity as Clark Kent for her birthday. Thanks to his years of secrecy, Lois doesn’t believe him even as the pair enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner. Ever the reporter, Lois begins to grow more and more paranoid as Clark constantly slinks away to one specific room in the Fortress. Eventually, Lois’ fear overwhelms her, and she becomes convinced that Superman is secretly a monster looking to make her the mother of a race of super-mutants. Sneaking into the Fortress’ armory, she steals a Kryptonite laser and confronts Superman by blasting him at point blank range. Luckily, Clark’s new condition makes him invulnerable to Kryptonite, and he manages to explain to her that her paranoia has been caused by the chemicals used to make her birthday gift: a 24-hour superpower formula.

Lois only comes after Superman because of her paranoid hallucinations, but she still comes surprisingly close to taking him down. If anyone really wanted to kill the Man of Steel, employing Lois Lane as their assassin would probably get them farther than a generic alien invasion. There’s nobody else that Superman trusts more, at least not enough to bring them to his Fortress of Solitude so freely. But it’s the issue of trust that put Superman in this risky position in the first place.

All-Star Superman is an Elseworlds tale, so it’s not surprising that it features a version of Lois who doesn’t know Clark’s secret identity. Even so, it’s clear that this version of the pair has been a couple for quite some time, long enough that Superman should have revealed his identity to her long before his final days. Had she been able to know and trust Superman more fully, her chemically-induced paranoia wouldn’t have turned her against the Man of Steel so easily.

In the primary DC Comics continuity, Superman and Lois’ romance is to die for, and in All-Star Superman, Clark nearly does. While it’s doubtful that anything could ever turn the world’s greatest reporter against the love of her life, it’s interesting to note that Lois Lane will be there to stop a secretive Superman if he ever falls out of line. After all, Hell hath no fury like a Lane scorned.
