WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 2, “The Variant,” now streaming on Disney+.

In Loki Episode 2, a clue uncovered by Owen Wilson’s Mobius in the pilot episode pays off in a big way. Mobius discovers a pack of Kablooie gum in 16th-century France that helps lead him to the Lady Loki variant in a Roxxcart during a catastrophic storm in the year 2050. While the Kablooie gum seems like a simple clue in the pilot episode, it turns out to be the actual answer to locating the Loki variant Mobius and his team are hunting.

The name literally gives away everything. Kablooie, in a sense, is another word for an apocalyptic event, which is how the variant is covering her tracks. The titular Loki discovers the variant Loki’s scheme of hiding within apocalyptic events because it will wipe out any potential timeline variants, and therefore remain undetected by the TVA.

Not only does the gum literally reference apocalyptic events, but it’s on record as only being on the market between 2047 and 2051, which significantly narrows down the timeframe in which the Loki variant is hiding out. As such, all Mobius and Loki need to do is cross-reference apocalyptic events with the gum brand. This seems like far too obvious a clue for the Loki variant to have left behind.

This variant, which is revealed to be a blonde female version of Loki, has led the titular Loki and the TVA right to her. It seems strange that Lady Loki would be so careless, especially since she has so far bested the TVA at every turn. Not only does she avoided capture, but she also executes a meticulous plan of her own in the meantime. Therefore, the Kablooie gum may have been a deliberate trail left.

Lady Loki reveals that she knew, or at least theorized, that the TVA was working with another Loki or would do so eventually. As such, she was curious to find out if they had been able to recreate a Loki superior to herself. She scoffs at the Loki and feels assured that she is the superior iteration. When Loki offers her a role in his scheme to overthrow the Time-Keepers and gain control of the TVA, she vaguely explains that she has bigger ambitions than that.

Then she sets off a series of Time Bombs. These create astronomical amounts of time variants from the Sacred Timeline, which was part of her plan all along and the result of her previous attacks on TVA agents when she stole their reset charges. This is when she makes her escape, seemingly rather effortlessly, from the TVA.

Lady Loki leaves the door behind her open enough for Loki to follow her through, despite the pleas from Mobius to stick with the team. When the time doors were previously used, they didn’t remain open for the same length of time. They were more efficient in sealing themselves up behind the person using the door. This may be a clue that Lady Loki always intended for Loki to follow her through, explaining why she would leave, what in retrospect is, a very obvious clue to her location.

There is still much of Lady Loki’s plans and intentions left to be discovered. The Goddess of Mischief likely has several twists and turns along the way that may only make sense when the larger picture is revealed. So while it’s currently unclear why she left the Kablooie gum in 16th-century France, it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t an intentional part of her plan. It certainly didn’t stop her from achieving her goal of setting off a massive disruption to the Sacred Timeline and successfully evading capture.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Eugene Cordero. New episodes air Wednesdays on Disney+.
