Luca 10 Exciting Things We Already Know About The Latest Pixar Movie

Pixar’s Luca is the latest animated feature that will be released from the world-renowned studio, which has been owned by the Walt Disney Company for a number of years. The movie will be yet another completely original story in their long line of award-winning features.

Just like other Pixar films, all fans have had to go on for so long is some concept art, but now a number of new details have been revealed about the project, which will look to continue on from Pixar’s past successes. From the team behind this potential hit to the premise and even a few teases as to what the film may include, there’s a lot of information to dig into about this animated fantasy adventure.

10 It Has A Trailer

On February 25th, audiences were treated to a teaser trailer for the upcoming movie. While it failed to reveal too much of the movie outside of what fans already knew, it did give everyone a good opportunity to see what these soon-to-be iconic characters actually look like in action.

The animation style is traditional of that of Pixar, although the trailer clearly demonstrates how far the technology has come in terms of producing real-world landscapes, impressive physics in its use of water, and its new body transformation techniques with its protagonists.

9 The Setting

Over the years Pixar has taken moviegoers around the world. They’ve experienced the streets of Mexico in Coco during Día de los Muertos and been taken into the kitchens of highly acclaimed restaurants in Paris, France for Ratatouille.

With this original movie, Pixar wanted to head back to Europe, but to a completely different country on the continent. Luca will therefore take place in a small town in Italy. The town itself sits on the Italian Riviera and is therefore very reliant on the waters it sits upon.

8 Its Cast

Pixar always thinks outside of the box when it comes to casting and for Luca, that’s no different. The emotional depths of the movie really are built around its two protagonists and the studio has enlisted the voices of Jacob Tremblay as Luca Paguro and Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto Scorfano.

Tremblay is known for his work on recent hits like Doctor Sleep and his upcoming role voicing Flounder in The Little Mermaid. Grazer on the other hand may be known for It and Shazam. The cast is rounded out by the likes of Emma Berman, Marco Barricelli, Saverio Raimondo, Jim Gaffigan, and Maya Rudolph.

7 The Director

There have been a limited number of Pixar directors across their filmography, in part due to the fact that the studio continues to turn to a small number of trusted people for the role, who have been with the company for quite some time.

However, for Luca, the studio is turning to someone who is yet to have directed a feature film. Italian-born Enrico Casarosa will be directing the project, which is hugely influenced by his own background. Casarosa has previously directed the short La Luna, which interestingly features a similarly designed character to Luca’s father.

6 The Writers

While the story will of course be impacted by Enrico Casarosa, Pixar has also enlisted the help of two writers, which is common on their animated projects. Both Jesse Andrews and Mike Jones have been hired to write the screenplay for Luca.

Jesse Andrews has not worked with Pixar in the past but showcased his impressive talents with an adaptation of Every Day, alongside a number of well-received novels including Me and Earl and the Dying Girl which he also wrote the feature for. Mike Jones is credited as a Senior Story and Creative Artist at Pixar, having previously gained attention on the Black List for his script Event Of A Moon Disaster. He also helped pen Soul.

5 The Production Process

With the film so heavily influenced by director Enrico Casarosa’s childhood growing up in Genoa, the production of the movie had to look back not only at Italy itself but also at Italian cinema for inspiration. Casrosa has pointed out two key influences for the project.

Elements of both Federico Fellini and Hayao Miyazaki can be found throughout. What’s more, Pixar actually sent their writers and artists to the Italian Riviera in order to soak up its local culture as well as to better understand the story.

4 The Premise

The official synopsis of Luca reads “Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.”

3 The Meaning Behind The Film

Fans have been quick to highlight some of the potential meanings of Luca, thanks in large part to the trailer that has been released. There is clearly larger symbolism here for hiding one’s true identity from the outside world.

Many from the LGBTQ+ community have made comparisons between the premise of this movie and hiding sexuality. What’s more, some have suggested the two protagonists may actually be gay themselves, which would be one of the first instances of Disney fully embracing an LGBTQ+ relationship on the big screen.

2 It’s Release Date

Pixar is known for creating truly memorable and likable characters, in the backdrop of an unforgettable landscape. The titular Luca will likely be no different and fans of the animation studio are already excited for the release of this unique production.

The movie has been given an official release date from the Walt Disney Company, one that takes into account the global crisis and the many delays that have happened within the industry. As of this writing, Luca is still on track to release on June 18th, 2021.

1 Only In Theaters

What’s interesting about Luca is that Disney has been very clear about their intentions in terms of its release. While of course it is subjected to change, there is no mention of being able to access the movie at home in the marketing of the film.

Instead, Disney seems to be going all in, releasing the movie in theaters across the world. This means that it is looking to skip the Premier Access option that the company is going to use with Raya And The Last Dragon alongside cinema release and is instead purely focusing on the big screen; something Pixar’s Soul, unfortunately, wasn’t able to do.
