Magic: the Gathering’s Commander format is pretty popular, and in some games, the best route to victory is through the flames and fury of dragons.

Dragons are the archetypical creatures of red mana, but they have appeared in all five colors, such as in the Dragons of Tarkir set. Meanwhile, The Ur-Dragon is an enormous 10/10 flying Dragon for {4}WUBRG, and this mighty beast can make for a powerhouse commander. Here’s what this deck is capable of.

Building The Brood

Most tribal decks tend to have a fairly low converted mana cost, or CMC, such as Elves, Zombies, Goblins and even Humans. By contrast, most Dragons have a CMC of at least five, and many are six or higher. Ordinarily, that’s far too too-heavy, but these flying beasts will have sufficient support no matter their CMC. This deck may feel free to include high-cost Dragons, so long as those Dragons have powerful effects.

All five colors will be represented here, especially since the Fate Reforged and Dragons of Tarkir sets have tribe-minded Dragons of all colors. The five legendary Dragons from Fate Reforged each have a potent triggered ability based on Dragons attacking. Silumgar, for example, is a blue-black Dragon whose low power is more than made up for with its one-sided boardwipe effect. There are also five wedge-colored Dragons from Planar Chaos, which have devastating triggered abilities when they deal damage. Teneb, for instance, can resurrect creatures straight to the battlefield, Oros is a three-damage boardwipe to non-white creatures and Numot can destroy lands. These abilities will add up fast.

But Dragons aren’t always as straightforward as “attack and kill things.” This deck is flexible, despite its tribal nature, and some Dragons have truly unique effects. Hellkite Tyrant, for example, is a 6/5 flier with trample, and if iTs controller has 20 or more artifacts under their control during the upkeep, that’s instant victory. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind, can ping targets and draw cards, and it can form vicious combos with the Curiosity enchantment and Basilisk Collar. Dragonlord Dromoka, as a white-green Dragon, won’t let the opponents cast spells during its controller’s turn at all. That eliminates all hostile counterspells and combat tricks. Then, there’s Skythiryx, which can win via poison counters of regular damage.

A few non-Dragons should be included too, mainly to support the scaly stars of this deck. Faeburrow Elder is a green-white Treefolk that can tap for colors of mana based on the colors among permanents its controller has. If the player has a five-colored Dragon in play, Treefolk tapping for WUBRG all at once is an incredible deal. Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, a newcomer from Theros: Beyond Death, allows the player to play an additional land per turn and tap their lands for any color of mana. Finally, Birds of Paradise is the token (but very effective) “mana dork” this deck needs.

Support Spells

Dragons can’t do it alone; they will need some arcane fire support to clear the path to victory. Some opposing spells can take down even the mighty dragons, so these instants, sorceries and enchantments can keep the dragon horde in good shape. Removal options are strong here, since the deck can access all five colors and pay huge mana costs. The likes of Anguished Unmaking, Path to Exile, Abrupt Decay and Spit Flame are easy to cast, and selective boardwipes are an option, too. Crux of Fate can either destroy all Dragons or spare the Dragons and kill everything else. Naturally, players using The Ur-Dragon will choose the latter mode. Plus, Cyclonic Rift is always a good call if each opposing player’s board state is becoming dangerous.

Some of these support cards can add mana or give buffs to friendly Dragons. Frontier Siege’s Khans mode adds GG in case there aren’t enough mana ramp effects in play, and the Dragons mode allows each new Dragon to fight an opposing creature. That can clear out the board in a hurry. Meanwhile, Swan Song and Negate can neutralize powerful enemy spells, such as boardwipes or combo pieces, and tutors such as Diabolic Tutor can help the player find the missing piece to their strategy on demand.

Artifacts And Lands

Mana rocks should be present in this deck, and they run the gamut from the usual Sol Ring and Commander’s Sphere to various guild signets to the mighty Chromatic Orrery, a new addition from the 2021 Core Set. This artifact is costly, but it taps for five colorless at once, and it has Chromatic Lantern’s effect built in. It also has a potent card draw effect. Urza’s Incubator, meanwhile, can make Dragons much easier to cast, and Swiftfoot Boots and/or Lightning Greaves can protect the most valuable Dragon on the team.

Since this is a five-color deck, the manabase is rather complicated. Many dual lands will be present, such as the ten shocklands and the checklands (like Sunpetal Grove), and fetchlands (as budget allows). Tri-lands like Nomad Outpost and Jungle Shrine also help, as do City of Brass and Path of Ancestry. Utility lands have a place here too, from Reliquary Tower (common in many Commander decks) to Crucible of the Spirit Dragon, useful for casting the most expensive Dragon spells of all.
