Marvel fans are growing more excited about the upcoming movies in the MCU’s Phase Four, particularly Eternals, which boasts an all-star cast.

Although sequels to established hits like Thor: Love and Thunder and Spider-Man: No Way Home are more highly anticipated, Eternals is one of the MCU’s most exciting upcoming installments. It’ll be a Marvel movie like no other, covering thousands of years and introducing an all-powerful race of cosmic beings that have been hiding out on Earth this whole time.

In addition to introducing such huge stars as Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and Salma Hayek to the MCU, Eternals might significantly change the franchise at large. At the very least, it will expand the MCU’s scope.

10 The Story Timeline Is Thousands Of Years Long

The furthest back in human history that the MCU has gone, save for a couple of Viking-related flashbacks in the Thor movies, is Steve Rogers’ pulpy adventures in the Second World War.

According to the official synopsis of Eternals, the movie’s story timeline will last for thousands of years as the titular beings have been hiding out on Earth for 7,000 years.

9 The Deviants

The Eternals movie will almost certainly introduce MCU viewers to the Changing People, also known as the Deviants, the sworn enemies of the Eternals. The Deviants were initially created for the Celestials to eat them as a treat.

However, they became sentient and developed their own culture and society separate from the Celestials. Ever since, the Eternals and the Deviants have been at war across the cosmos.

8 Flesh Out The MCU’s Cosmic Side

Carol Danvers only occasionally communes with the Avengers, because Brie Larson was too busy making Captain Marvel to have a starring role in Endgame and, in-universe, she’s off protecting planets that don’t have their own superhero team watching over them.

It’s clear that there’s a much larger universe in the MCU, but cosmic movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok have only scratched the surface. The Eternals movie can flesh out the cosmic side of this fictional universe more.

7 The Backstory Of Knowhere

Knowhere, the home of the Collector and a significant planet in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War, is located inside the floating severed head of a Celestial.

Since the Celestials are the ones responsible for creating the Eternals, they might play a major role in the plot of the movie. If so, the movie can explain how a Celestial’s severed head ended up being turned into a planet.

6 Ego

In the comics, the Eternals were created by the Celestials. The only established Celestial character in the MCU is Ego the Living Planet, Peter Quill’s biological father played by Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

In the Guardians sequel, Ego introduced his son to “The Expansion,” his evil plan to remake the universe in his own image. It’s possible that, in the MCU’s continuity, the Eternals were created by Ego himself.

5 The Consequences Of The Snap

So far, Disney+’s MCU series have been heavily focused on exploring the consequences of Thanos’ destructive finger-snap, as Monica Rambeau was seen re-materializing in WandaVision and the economic fallout has been explored in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

But the snap didn’t just affect humans — it was a universe-wide massacre. The Eternals movie can dig into the consequences of the Snap on a cosmic scale.

4 The Creation Of Mutants

Since the MCU is more than a decade in and its world has been fully fleshed out, it would be impossible for the franchise’s X-Men reboot to explain that there’s been a school full of mutants all along.

Fans were disappointed when WandaVision didn’t reboot the X-Men series as expected, but maybe the Eternals movie will be the one to explain the creation of mutants in the MCU.

3 Asgardian History

As long as the Eternals movie is going to take place across a whopping 7,000 years, then it could take a detour to reveal some of the little-seen history of Asgard.

Odin’s kingdom has a long, rich backstory and the MCU has only shown a drop in the bucket. Thor: Ragnarok revealed that Odin’s retelling of Asgard’s background has been massively whitewashed. Eternals can explore the darker corners of Asgardian history.

2 The Multiverse

With Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Phase Four is diving headfirst into the MCU’s multiverse. After Spider-Man: Far From Home’s fake-out, the franchise will finally start exploring parallel universes for real.

Since the Eternals’ powers are vaguely defined in the comics and will likely be retooled in their adaptation to the big screen, it’s possible they’ll possess the power of interdimensional travel.

1 The Black Knight Is One Of The Few Key Avengers Not Yet In The MCU

Throughout the Infinity Saga, the MCU managed to fit in just about every significant Avenger, from the Wasp to Black Panther to the Hulk. One of the few key Avengers that have yet to be introduced into the MCU is the Black Knight, a medieval-themed superhero who gets his powers from a magical sword passed down from generation to generation.

The Dane Whitman incarnation of the Black Knight is set to finally debut in the MCU in the Eternals movie, played by Game of Thrones star Kit Harington.
