Marvel Chooses A Side In The Rivalry Between the NYPD and FDNY

Warning: contains spoilers for Devil’s Reign #1!

In the feud between two famous New York institutions, Marvel has officially chosen a side, and the result is not surprising for anyone who’s read up on current Marvel continuity regarding Spider-Man, Daredevil, and the greater Marvel Universe at large. It’s no secret that plenty of Marvel’s major heroes are based out of New York City (and plenty of villains appear in NYC as well), which means both the police and firefighters of the city regularly come into contact with the Avengers, the X-Men, etc. But in Devil’s Reign #1, it’s clear that not all of these interactions are positive.

In the past few issues of Daredevil, the Man Without Fear recently uncovered drastic corruption within the New York Police Department. Even so, he was still under arrest (even after his heroic actions), but the Avengers interfered in a very public manner. In particular, Spider-Man called out the police for attacking a hero when they should’ve been investigating their own organization. Now, perhaps because of the incident, the Kingpin of New York has ushered in a new era of anti-superhero bias that turns the city against itself.

As Mayor of New York, Kingpin Wilson Fisk effectively bans any and all superheroes in the city. According to Fisk, “…any individual who exhibits a use of powers deemed ‘superhuman’ or commits acts of destructive vigilantism will be charged as a threat.” Immediately, law enforcement converge on multiple superheroes: Moon Knight is accosted by a Thunderbolt Unit (led by General Ross), Doctor Octopus arrests Reed Richards and Susan Storm, and more come for the other heroes. As Spider-Man – Miles Morales – saves a child from a burning building, a firefighter praises the webslinger. “Son, you’re a godsend. I’d say you should check in with one of the medics for smoke inhalation…” At this point, the firefighter sees a Thunderbolt Unit. “…but you’d better go. Now.”

Historically speaking, Spider-Man has usually had good standing with the NYPD; it was the press led by J. Jonah Jameson that hated Peter Parker (and now Miles). The fact that Marvel was willing to put New York’s finest in a bad light in the Daredevil books but not the FDNY reveals the company has clearly chosen a side between the two institutions. While the actions of the fire department are certainly not as controversial as the police, the two still have a longstanding, albeit friendly, rivalry.

It remains to be seen exactly how Wilson Fisk’s decision will impact the rest of the country, or the world for that matter. For now, the superhero ban remains limited to New York…but considering Fisk’s aspirations to become President, he may have plans to expand the ban nationwide. Regardless, Spider-Man (and Marvel) have sided with the FDNY over the NYPD, at least for now.
