Marvel Needs to Bring Back Hawkeye’s Ultimate Costume

With the new Hawkeye series arriving this December, Marvel has the perfect opportunity to bring back Clint Barton’s best costume from the Ultimate Marvel universe. With the Ultimate Marvel universe acting as a silent blueprint for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film version of Hawkeye’s wardrobe took inspiration from his Ultimate counterpart, a high ranking SHIELD and black ops operative. With his time as Ronin transitioning back to Hawkeye, Clint’s second Ultimate costume may be from a heavily criticized period of the popular Marvel imprint but its contemporary style and appearance may help reinvent and make the often overlooked Avenger stand out more than before.

Created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, the Ultimate version of Clint Barton appeared in Ultimates #7 where the black ops operative known for his archery and impeccable aim was being made a public member of the Ultimates, this world’s version of the Avengers. Having been a long-time collaborator with SHIELD director Nick Fury, Clint helped the Ultimates battle against the Chitauri, detain illegal metahumans, and other missions while still managing to get home to his wife and family on time. This all changed in Ultimates 2 when Clint was kidnapped and his family was killed by assassins working with the Liberators, a group of supervillains secretly created by international governments fearing the power and authority of the US military complex. Although Clint was able to free himself and help his teammates overcome their enemies, killing the traitorous Black Widow did little to resolve his guilt, remorse or loss.

In Jeph Loeb and Joe Madeuira’s Ultimates 3, Hawkeye appeared with a new costume that included a full bodysuit with the sleeves removed, a mask with goggles and a bullseye target in the center, and a preference for guns and quickdraw crossbows. The loss of his family left him emotionally devastated which lead to a more reckless, brash and suicidal attitude that often put him at odds with other Ultimates. After the events of Ultimatum, Hawkeye found himself working alongside Fury in his new black ops team the Avengers, which dealt with various superhuman threats before eventually rejoining the Ultimates again.

When considering the options for Hawkeye when it came time for his MCU debut, his Ultimate wardrobe made the most sense considering his original costume is too outdated and difficult to translate in modern standards. But with his modern day costume being essentially civilian wear, Clint lacks that signature costume look that his teammates in the Avengers adorn. This outfit would give him a distinct superhero-like look that would fit in with other contemporary styles in the MCU and his current mindset. After surviving the events of Avengers: Endgame, Clint has his family again but is haunted by the prior five years operating as Ronin, actions that are likely coming back for a pound of flesh. This trauma and struggle to adjust fits in with the emotionally aggressive and temperamental Hawkeye this costume was made to fit.

While this costume is from a point in Ultimate Marvel history that’s heavily disliked and considered best left forgotten, it would be interesting to see Hawkeye rock such an ensemble, even if certain details were removed or adjusted. It could symbolize more of his past with SHIELD as a black ops agent and his desire to remain in the shadows instead of the spotlight and attention the Avengers typically receive. With the upcoming Hawkeye series debuting in November, hopefully its success will convince Marvel to give this Ultimate costume a second chance.
