Marvels Guardians Of The Galaxy Nebula Could Still Be Alive

The Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game features a new take on the Marvel Universe from developer Eidos-Montréal, and one of its most significant departures from the source material involves Gamora’s sister, Nebula. Marvel’s GOTG took inspiration from the MCU and the comics, giving way to a unique new take on the team, including Gamora, and her past with Thanos and Nebula. While the comics did not show Gamora and Nebula working side by side to stop Thanos, the MCU’s portrayal of the characters brought them together on the same side of the Infinity Saga. Conversely, the Marvel’s GOTG game Gamora and Nebula have a much different relationship with one another than either their comic or movie versions.

[Warning: Major spoilers for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are below.]

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features 16 chapters where each character undergoes a personal transformation in addition to team-related character development. Gamora begins her personal story as an emotionally closed-off assassin looking to complete missions alongside the Guardians, and she is reluctant to share her past. As the story progresses, however, Gamora eventually breaks down her walls and shares a secret with the team about Nebula that may be hidden from the galaxy at large.

During an emotional cutscene in chapter 12 of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora picks up a doll that belonged to a child of Knowhere. Seeing the child seduced by the Promise, Gamora charges after Raker’s forces in a furious rage, determined to save them. While Gamora continues to fight on her own, the remaining Guardians work to stop the rest of Raker’s henchmen and figure out what has Gamora so upset that she would leave the rest of the team behind. Star-Lord attempts to speak with Gamora, and stops her before she can continue her own personal mission of revenge. Gamora then reveals to Star-Lord, Rocket, and the rest of the Guardians that she must stop Raker to prevent other children from ending up like her and Nebula.

How Nebula Could Still Be Alive In Marvel’s GOTG Game

Marvels Guardians Of The Galaxy Nebula Could Still Be Alive

Both Gamora and her sister underwent the same training during their time with Thanos, but unlike Gamora, Nebula became a twisted being driven by vengeance and hate. Gamora reveals to the team that Nebula is now dead, and that she blames herself for being unable to protect her sister. In one of the more shocking reveals in Marvel’s GOTG, Gamora lets the team know that she is the one who killed Nebula, saying that, “the Nebula I knew had been twisted into a hateful, vengeful, monster-thing. One who would never stop unless I stopped her. So I did. I just never expected to survive.”

Given the circumstances of their priorities, the Guardians never ask Gamora for more details regarding Nebula’s death. However, it’s entirely possible that, like Drax and Thanos in Marvel’s GOTG, the conflict between Gamora and Nebula was never fully resolved. While the galaxy is convinced that Drax had killed Thanos, the powers that led him to Thanos in the first place still make him feel like the Mad Titan is still out there. As far as it has been revealed, only Nebula and Gamora were present during their fight, and Gamora’s words make it sound like she left her sister for dead instead of killing her herself.

In any case, it appears as if news of Nebula’s death has not reached the galaxy at large the same way Thanos’ death has, as is evidenced by Rocket’s reaction to Gamora’s reveal. It seems almost improbable for one of the galaxy’s most infamous characters to be dead and for it not to be a widely known fact. Marvel’s GOTG explains fully how Drax killed Thanos, so it’s hard to believe that Gamora has given the Guardians the full story of what really went down. Additionally, Drax’s victory over Thanos is documented in his Nova Corps file, while Nebula’s death isn’t mentioned in Gamora’s. Given the information available and the way it was delivered, it seems more likely that Gamora left Nebula for dead rather than delivering the final blow herself.

While it’s entirely speculative, there is a plausible reality that Gamora did not share everything related to Nebula’s death with the other Guardians on purpose. Gamora refers to Nebula as a monster, but shortly afterward calls herself a monster for killing her. There is little reason to believe that Gamora was sharing everything with the other Guardians, and it’s possible it’s because she was not proud of how she left Nebula to die. Additionally, Marvel’s GOTG teases a sequel with Thanos’ involvement, and one of the lead characters that could make this happen is Nebula.

How Nebula Could Return In A Marvel’s GOTG Sequel

There’s a lot that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy leaves unresolved for a sequel, but the unresolved fates of Thanos, Nebula and Ronan the Accuser are the most important. As the Guardians of the Galaxy review the Nova Corps criminal records in an earlier chapter, Ronan’s file indicates that he is currently in an administrative position in the Kree Accuser Corps. Additionally, his record also lists that after the Galactic War Ronan attempted to incite civil war against the Supreme Intelligence, a comparable figure to the Nova Corps’ Worldmind.

A sequel to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy could very well include Thanos, Nebula, and Ronan, something that was seen in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy does reference many other Marvel figures, so naturally, the game was going to include references to three of the Guardians’ main antagonists. However, all three of these villains are conspicuously absent from the main game, making their potential return a sequel all the more enticing.

It’s possible that the ambiguity behind Nebula’s death, the uncertainty surrounding Drax’s confrontation with Thanos, and the alibi for Ronan could all be circumstantial. However, given the information revealed in-game, the fact that both Thanos and Nebula are iconic Marvel characters in their own right, and the fact Eidos-Montréal left the door open for a potential Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, there is a real possibility that Nebula could return.
