MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

Ever since 2008’s Iron Man, every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has included at least one extra scene during the end credits. This mid-credits and post-credits stingers have always been used to tease future movies in the franchise, whether it’s something broad like Nick Fury telling Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative or something more specific like Thanos pledging to collect the Infinity Stones.

At the end of every MCU movie, all the audience members – or, at least, the ones who are savvy to the drill – stay in their seats and sit through the entire credits sequence. So, here are the MCU’s five most exciting post-credits scenes, and five that weren’t worth the wait.

10 EXCITING: Peter Parker’s Identity Is Revealed (Spider-Man: Far From Home)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

This is the scene that made the negotiation breakdown with Sony so horrifying. When it seemed as though Spidey was out of the MCU, it wasn’t devastating because one of the franchise’s best characters would be leaving; it was because he was leaving on such a mind-blowing cliffhanger.

At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, when everything was going great for Peter Parker, Mysterio revealed his secret identity to the world from beyond the grave with the help of the Daily Bugle – and framed him for the attack on London.

9 WASN’T WORTH THE WAIT: Bruce Banner Therapizes Tony Stark (Iron Man 3)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

Instead of setting up Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy or any of the MCU’s other exciting then-upcoming projects, the post-credits scene of Iron Man 3 just had Tony Stark complaining to Bruce Banner, before Banner tells Stark that he’s not that kind of doctor.

8 EXCITING: Nick Fury Pages Captain Marvel (Avengers: Infinity War)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

Following the success of Thanos’ plan to wipe out half of all life in the main movie, Avengers: Infinity War’s post-credits scene gives us a glimpse at the Snap’s impact on the wider world.

Nick Fury and Maria Hill drive through a city in chaos. As Hill turns to dust, Fury takes out a pager and calls his lifeline for help. When he also turns to dust, he drops the pager, revealing the Captain Marvel emblem.

7 WASN’T WORTH THE WAIT: Thor Visits Jane (Thor: The Dark World)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

Arguably the worst entry in the MCU – for reasons ranging from it being a humorless slog to it being the franchise’s most formulaic installment – Thor: The Dark World didn’t even succeed in giving audiences a tantalizing note to leave the theater on.

The God of Thunder travels to London to visit Jane Foster. But since the movie gave us no reason to care about their relationship (quite the opposite, actually), the scene had no impact.

6 EXCITING: Thanos Looms Over The Statesman (Thor: Ragnarok)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

Right after Thor and the surviving Asgardians escaped from the destruction of their homeworld in the Statesman and prepared to settle down on Earth, Thanos’ ship loomed over them. This warned audiences of frightful things to come.

The opening of Avengers: Infinity War followed on immediately from this, with Thanos and the Black Order destroying the ship and killing most of its inhabitants.

5 WASN’T WORTH THE WAIT: Too Many Sorcerers (Doctor Strange)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

After the end credits of Doctor Strange, one of the MCU’s cookie-cutter origin stories elevated by mind-boggling visual effects, Karl Mordo visits Jonathan Pangborn and strips him of his magical powers, claiming there are “too many sorcerers” in the world.

By focusing on two ancillary characters and not setting up anything in the immediate future, this was a pretty disappointing tag. Plus, with Scott Derrickson departing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it’ll probably never be paid off.

4 EXCITING: “Fine, I’ll Do It Myself.” (Avengers: Age Of Ultron)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

After The Avengers teased Thanos as the monolithic villain controlling Loki like a puppet, Avengers: Age of Ultron teased that he’d finally take on Earth’s mightiest heroes in their next team-up. Dissatisfied with the work of his lackies, Thanos dons the Infinity Gauntlet and says, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”

While Damion Poitier played Thanos in The Avengers, the Mad Titan was finally portrayed by Josh Brolin (having played him prominently in Guardians of the Galaxy) in Age of Ultron.

3 WASN’T WORTH THE WAIT: Bucky Is Awake (Black Panther)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Bucky Barnes went into cryosleep in Wakanda while Shuri figured out how to fix his brain. Black Panther’s post-credits scene simply established that Bucky would be back in fighting form in time for Avengers: Infinity War. Of all the possible setups for Infinity War, this was arguably the least exciting.

2 EXCITING: Nick Fury First Mentions The Avengers Initiative (Iron Man)

MCU 5 Most Exciting PostCredits Scenes (& 5 That Werent Worth The Wait)

Robert Downey, Jr. improvised the ending of Iron Man. The original plan was to stick to the comics and have Iron Man explained away as Tony Stark’s bodyguard. However, Downey felt that Tony would be too arrogant to let that happen and instead said, “I am Iron Man.”

In the credits, Tony is approached by Nick Fury, who introduces the “Avengers Initiative.” This is the post-credits scene that first introduced the notion of a shared cinematic universe with plenty more heroes to come.

1 WASN’T WORTH THE WAIT: Fury Invites Steve Onto The Avengers (Captain America: The First Avenger)

After the excitement of Nick Fury telling Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative in Iron Man’s post-credits scene, Captain America: The First Avenger did the same thing with diminishing returns.

Fury visits Steve Rogers in the 21st century and invites him onto the team. It wasn’t even an original scene; it was cut down from a scene in The Avengers.
