MCU SpiderMan 3’s Christmas Setting Means It’s Still Copying Iron Man

Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 is set near Christmas, marking another example of the franchise and character copying Iron Man. During the last few years while Spider-Man has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the biggest topics of discussion about Tom Holland’s iteration is how his Spider-Man compares to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Although the two characters can be quite different, there are several similarities. They’ll forever be intertwined in the minds of many due to their MCU connections.

Iron Man and Spider-Man’s relationship is a quietly divisive topic in the MCU. After Peter was introduced as a recruit of Tony’s in Captain America: Civil War, the two appeared on-screen together in their next two films. While the bond that was formed between them worked for most, some feel the friendly neighborhood hero is becoming Iron Man Jr. Whether it’s by dealing with villains created by Tony Stark or using suits designed by Stark or with his technology, there has been a growing feeling that the MCU is positioning Spider-Man as its Iron Man replacement. There’s no sign that Tony is directly involved with Spider-Man: Homecoming 3’s story, but it still appears Spider-Man’s next solo film is borrowing from Iron Man.

Recent set photos for Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 revealed its Christmas setting. Tom Holland has been spotted in a snowy New York set, and signage notes that it is the holiday season. However, Marvel has already done a third solo film set at Christmas with Iron Man 3. The end of Downey’s solo franchise saw director Shane Black place the story right before Christmas, with the finale happening on Christmas Eve. The idea of having another MCU properties take place around Christmas was bound to happen at some point, considering the number of movies and shows in development. But, the fact that it is Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 only fuels the comparisons between Spider-Man and Iron Man, with some inevitably feeling the former is copying the latter once more.

Although Spider-Man: Homecoming 3’s Christmas setting might copy Iron Man 3, Holland’s solo film can still be quite different. For starters, the Christmas setting isn’t even that big a part of Iron Man 3. Tony does get Pepper a giant bunny at the start and gifts Harley Keener some new gadgets at the end, but there’s otherwise not much of a focus put on Christmas. That can change with Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 as Peter trying to balance his personal life with his superhero responsibilities is always a key part of his stories. While the film is expected to involve the multiverse somehow, another obstacle for Peter could simply be figuring out what he wants to get Michelle for Christmas. Or, if his adventures involve going to another universe, then his entire goal could be returning home so he doesn’t miss Christmas plans with her, Aunt May, or friends.

Even with the Christmas setting, what Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 does with Peter Parker to continue or stop the Tony Stark comparisons remains to be seen. Fans will surely be on the lookout for other similarities between them and their third solo films due to the setting. Marvel could make that be the only aspect they have in common, though, depending on what happens in Spider-Man: Homecoming 3’s story. Or, the film could double-down on the Iron Man 3 parallels.
