Doctor Strange may not have become the Sorcerer Supreme in the MCU just yet; rather, that role could actually currently be held by Wong.

MCU Theory Wong Is The New Sorcerer Supreme (Not Doctor Strange)

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Wong may be the current Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not Doctor Strange’s titular character. The Ancient One was Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU for centuries, using the power of the Time Stone to peer into the future and identify threats before they materialize. She died in Doctor Strange killed after a clash with Kaecilius. As Wong reflected after Dormammu’s defeat, he said: “Earth has no Sorcerer Supreme to defend it. We must be ready.”

In the comics, of course, Doctor Strange succeeded the Ancient One as Sorcerer Supreme. While that evidently happened in some MCU-adjacent timelines – What If…? episode 4 revealed Doctor Strange was the Sorcerer Supreme who went wrong on one alternate Earth – there’s no evidence it has happened just yet in the main MCU one. Many viewers have assumed Strange has taken on the role, especially given his apparent guardianship of the Eye of Agamotto in Avengers: Infinity War, but it’s also entirely possible it has remained vacant; that Earth has had no Sorcerer Supreme since the Ancient One’s death, with the Masters of the Mystic Arts simply trying to fill the void.

But the evidence appears to be building for another theory, suggesting another Master of the Mystic Arts could have received a promotion. Earth may well have a Sorcerer Supreme already, but it may not be Doctor Strange at all.

Doctor Strange Appears To Be Guardian Of The Sanctum Sanctorum In New York

MCU Theory Wong Is The New Sorcerer Supreme (Not Doctor Strange)

Doctor Strange revealed there are three Sanctum Sanctorums scattered across the globe, with one in London, one in New York, one in Hong Kong. Together, these Sanctum Sanctorums generate a protective field across the planet to drive off potential interdimensional incursions, and each Sanctum Sanctorum has a sworn defender. The New York Sanctum was previously home to Daniel Drumm, but that particular member of the Masters of the Mystic Arts paid for his duty with his life when he was killed by Kaecilius and his Zealots. It increasingly looks as though Doctor Strange has taken over his post.

Doctor Strange was based at the Sanctum Sanctorum, not at the mystical city of Kamar-Taj, in both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War. The trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home suggests that is still true in the post-Avengers: Endgame MCU, with Spider-Man heading to the Sanctum Sanctorum at 117A Bleecker Street in the hopes Strange can help him hide his secret identity once again. Strange happens to be in New York right when the wall-crawler swings by, which would be a remarkable coincidence if he were not the protector of this particular Sanctum Sanctorum. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting the trailer also shows Wong giving Doctor Strange an instruction; while Strange clearly disobeys, he does so behind Wong’s back, as though Wong has the authority to issue orders. It really doesn’t look as though Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme just yet; rather, he is the defender of the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York, closely supervised by Wong. This makes sense, given that, for all his prodigious skill, Strange hasn’t really been practicing magic for long compared to other members of the Masters of the Mystic Arts.

This does, naturally, raise the question of just why Doctor Strange was guarding the Eye of Agamotto in Infinity War. In the comics, the Eye is traditionally associated with the Sorcerer Supreme, and certainly, the Ancient One was seen wearing it when she went into battle against the Chitauri in Endgame. But it’s quite possible Strange became the bearer of the Eye of Agamotto simply because he is the most experienced with its magic, having used it in the Dark Dimension for a substantial period of time, and that none of the other Masters wanted to learn how to use it.

Wong Is Performing Leadership Roles For The Masters Of The Mystic Arts

Doctor Strange does not seem to be performing the task of the Sorcerer Supreme, but Wong does. As seen in Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings, he is clearly based in Kamar-Taj, and when the sorcerers there detect an energy surge associated with Shang-Chi’s use of the Ten Rings, it is Wong who leads the investigation. Interestingly, he also appears to be coordinating a sort of support network for the Masters of the Mystic Arts because, in Shang-Chi’s post-credits scene, he is able to bring in Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner as advisers in a holo-conference while dialogue suggests there are regular occurrences. Even more curiously, Wong has built some sort of friendship with the Abomination, apparently serving as some sort of mentor to him, perhaps teaching him meditative techniques that help the Abomination control his rage. All this suggests Wong is the most important member of the Masters of the Mystic Arts right now.

Again, this is supported by the trailer for No Way Home. Evidently, some sort of crisis has just happened when Peter Parker gets to the Sanctum Sanctorum – the interior of the Sanctum Sanctorum is covered with snow – and so Wong is on hand. But with the crisis over, he gives Strange instructions not to use a dangerous spell that could damage the fabric of spacetime before he heads off on his way again. It’s just the kind of role one expects for the man actually running the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Whether he’s taken on the title of Sorcerer Supreme or not, Wong seems to be doing the job.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could see that change, of course. It’s likely the Multiversal chaos will force Doctor Strange to step up, to accept a position of responsibility rather than flaunt his gifts, and become the Sorcerer Supreme the Ancient One knew he was destined to be. Wong is a more humble man than Strange, and he won’t mind being surpassed by his former student, especially not if Stephen Strange proves himself worthy of that mantle in some spectacular act of heroism in the Doctor Strange sequel or another MCU title.
