Although the trend seemed strange when it started, it has become commonplace for major AAA releases to roll out the online portion of games a few week’s after the retail launch. In the case of a game like Grand Theft Auto 5, it ended up taking Rockstar months to get the feature fully up and running. Thanks to a stellar single player experience, the game’s reviews and sales didn’t suffer from the delay. In the case of Metal Gear Solid 5, the online component is also stumbling out of the gate a few weeks after the rest of the features.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain did launch with some multiplayer thanks to the Forward Operating Base invasions, but that is just a small taste of what’s to come. The bulk of the online experience will put players in the role of generic mercs and give them the chance to level up through three different class options, while battling other players in the field.

PC gamers won’t be able to explore Metal Gear Online until 2016, but console gamers are just a few weeks away from the rollout. The console version of Metal Gear Online becomes available October 6 for all players who own Metal Gear Solid 5. Konami hasn’t shared many details about the feature yet, but with the console launch just a few weeks away, a new trailer has been released to get the hype train rolling.

The preview video shows a player choosing between three classes; Infiltrator, Scout, or Enforcer. Each class has its own strengths and players can pick the one that best suits their play style. As gamers might expect, players will be able to customize the merc loadouts as they advance through Metal Gear Online.

The demo highlight’s Metal Gear Online’s version of Team Deathmatch, which is called Bounty Mode. The two team showdown starts each team with a number of respawn tickets and the team that runs out of tickets first is defeated. The mode seems very fun and adds a cool twist by making players who have scored a lot of kills more valuable targets.

Although the bulk of Metal Gear Online time will be spent playing as generic soldiers, players will have the chance to play as Big Boss, Ocelot, and other iconic characters from time to time. As they should be, the iconic characters are extra powerful and have special abilities unique to their skill sets.

We’ll reserve judgement until we get hands on time with Metal Gear Online, but if the online mode is of the same quality as the rest of the game, it’s definitely going to keep us entertained for a long time.
