A new rumor claims that Nintendo plans to release a remaster for the first Metroid Prime game in 2022 to celebrate the title’s 20th anniversary. While speculation regarding a Metroid Prime re-release has swirled around for some time, those particular details suggest the entire Prime trilogy is in the works for Nintendo Switch.
VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb claimed as much in July, telling Giant Bomb Show listeners that Nintendo has already completed production on the much-coveted remaster for the Metroid Prime trilogy. According to Grubb, the publisher continues to hold onto the collection primarily because of pandemic-induced QA testing restrictions. The journalist added, “Japan is still dealing with these issues so I don’t think those processes are going to open up any time soon.” At the time of writing, there’s no corroborating evidence to support Grubb’s comments; however, yet another rumor about Metroid Prime’s potential return has fans talking once more.
In response to a Twitter thread of wishlists for September 2021’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo World Report contributor Emily Rogers (via GamingBolt) said she previously heard about a Metroid Prime 1 project that may launch in 2022 in honor of its 20th anniversary. Rogers expressed uncertainty as to whether or not the re-release in question is for the full trilogy, but she’s “leaning toward” the remaster simply constituting “a re-release of the first game.”
RE: Prime Trilogy Last I heard, Nintendo was busy working on Metroid Prime 1 to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary in 2022. I’m not sure if we’re getting a ‘trilogy’ or just a re-release of the first game. I’m leaning toward the latter, but I hope we get the former.
This latest Metroid Prime-related rumor surfaced amid discourse about the next Nintendo Direct broadcast, which airs today, September 23, at 3:00 PM PT. The imminent launch of Metroid Dread on Switch indicates the stream will feature Metroid news of some kind, yet details on the rumored Prime release are not guaranteed to appear.
As always, fans should take the above Metroid Prime 1 rumor with a grain of salt for the time being. The same goes for ongoing speculation about a Metroid Prime trilogy collection. Some may recall that the first title’s Senior Designer, Michael Wikan, cast doubt on the possibility of a remaster earlier this year, making note of the “herculean effort” necessary to port the much older experiences to modern hardware. Either way, fans can at the very least get their Samus Aran fill this fall when Metroid Dread hits stores.
