Michael Sheen Wins Fan Poll To Be Next Doctor Who

Michael Sheen has been voted by Doctor Who fans as the actor they most want to see take up the role of the 14th Doctor. This comes following the announcement of Jodie Whittaker’s departure in 2022. Doctor Who has recently faced criticism from some quarters over its content and direction under the control of showrunner Chris Chibnall, although the show remains popular worldwide.

A Welsh actor and producer, Sheen started out as a theater actor in the 1990s before becoming known as a TV and movie actor in the 2000s. He has played a number of well-known public figures, including former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in The Deal, a 2003 TV movie; the late comedy actor Kenneth Williams in Fantabulousa! for the BBC in 2006; and the late broadcaster David Frost in the movie Frost/Nixon in 2008. He also played the role of The Surgeon in Prodigal Son, the Fox serial killer drama that was cancelled this year after two seasons.

More than 10,000 people voted in a Radio Times poll to find out the most popular choice for the next Doctor, with Sheen gaining 2o percent of the vote. Richard Ayoade of The IT Crowd, and with a guest appearance on The Mandalorian under his belt, came second with 15 percent. Third was Jo Martin, who has already played a version of The Doctor in the 12th series.

Sheen’s victory in the poll comes after critical approval for his performance as the angel Aziraphale in Good Omens, which has been commissioned for a second series. He previously had a role in Doctor Who, voicing the sinister House in 11th Doctor episode, “The Doctor’s Wife.” The actor has won a great many accolades throughout his career, those for his television and movie work, including four BAFTAs, one Welsh BAFTA, two Royal Television Society Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, to name but a few.

Sheen most certainly has the innate likability required for The Doctor and the proven acting ability to carry the role convincingly. There is a risk, however, that giving the role of The Doctor back to a male, white actor immediately after the first woman will be seen by some as a retrograde step for Doctor Who. Questions would be asked as to whether the BBC was backtracking on diversity if it casts Sheen, but it is almost certain he could win over audiences with the right showrunner and good stories to match his capabilities. There are a number of actors being considered for the role of The Doctor and it is uncertain when the BBC will make an announcement. It is safe to say, though, that many fans will be delighted if it turns out to be Michael Sheen.
