That said, Claire has a very mature yet realistic outlook about her family, giving this interesting take on the Dunphys. She insists that they do have their moments, but they tend to be rare.

Though some initially saw Gloria as a trophy wife for Jay, she proves to be a much more interesting character. Not only is she a very loving wife and mother, but she is also extremely funny with a lot of her humor coming from her unexpected anger.

Though Jay can act irrationally and even show off a temper of his own, when Gloria unleashes her full fury, even he is scared. So when some kids are out doing Halloween pranks and egg their house, Gloria proves that she isn’t one who takes those kinds of jokes well.

Mitchell is seen in the show as a successful lawyer, but he is also a man with a lot of insecurity. He was always a bit of an outcast his whole life and that certainly stayed with him in his adult life.

When his daughter Lily seems to be smarter than the other children her age, Mitchell begins to worry about the fact that gifted children are not always accepted by their peers. He insists this was the reason he didn’t have friends as a kid, not realizing that it isn’t something to brag about.

The show has a lot of fun exploring the various issues and struggles in a marriage. Some of the funniest moments come from Phil and Claire’s marriage, which is often dysfunctional at best. While Claire can be a little demanding, at times, she does have to put up with a clueless husband like Phil.

During one of their many fights, Claire is incredibly angry at Phil and he doesn’t know why. Asking what he did wrong only makes Claire more upset, causing Phil to desperately guess at some special occasion he might have missed.

Cam is one of the most entertaining characters on the show, thanks to his big energy and overly dramatic approach to everything. Cam can also get easily offended at things, yet he also has a good deal of confidence in himself.

These two aspects of Cam’s personality collide when Cam complains about how gay men are often stereotyped and treated like women. He insists they do not share the stereotypical interests that women have, such as liking pink. When Mitchell reminds Cam that he does like pink outfits, Cam corrects that it is actually the other way around.

Phil Dunphy may be a loving father and husband, but that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily the smartest guy in the world. He tries his best and doesn’t seem to notice the more foolish things that he says.

Phil is ever so confident in his words of wisdom that he assembled some of them into a book. While sharing some of the best entries, it seems like he didn’t double-check the math on one of these pieces of advice.

Despite what some people might think by looking at them, Jay and Gloria have a great marriage, for the most part. And although they can disagree and squabble at times, Jay seems to acknowledge that he is a pretty lucky guy.

While at home alone together, Gloria tells Jay that she is about to take a shower. Jay simply lets her know that any time he says no to a question like that, she will know there’s something very wrong.

Though he may be a good father, there are times when Phil behaves more like an immature kid himself. He prides himself on being the cool dad who is into all the latest trends, but he might not be as up-to-date on the current slang as he likes to think he is.

While explaining how cool he is, Phil explains that he knows all the young and hip texting phrases. He successfully proves his coolness by knowing LOL and OMG, but he misses the mark with WTF. His confidence that he is right makes it even funnier.
