Mortal Kombat How Kenshi and Scorpion Became the Games Dynamic Duo

In the Mortal Kombat franchise, there have been a few iconic partnerships whose stories will be forever intertwined, not just in-game but in the minds of fandom. Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s rivalry is one of the most prominent, with the Hellspawn known has Hanzo Hasashi driven to kill the ice-ninja and his clan.

There’s also Liu Kang and Kung Lao, the Shaolin monks, as well as Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage. Admittedly, however, they all have a bond through duty with the common goal of saving Earthrealm from invasion. Something beyond collegiality eventually develops, but duty always came first. Come Mortal Kombat X, however, a new dynamic d u o evolved in the form of Kenshi and Scorpion, quickly rivaling what Hanzo had with Sub-Zero.

In this game, Scorpion was put to rest, allowing Hanzo time to rebuild the Shirai Ryu and soothe his soul after the deaths of his wife and child. However, his world would be rocked when Kenshi, the blind swordsman, arrived with his son, Takeda, which proved to be the catalyst for the yellow ninja to return.

Kenshi’s story is equally tragic, as Shang Tsung tricked him into stealing Sento, a mystical sword, from the Well of Souls, which took his sight. Since then, Kenshi h as been going after all these evil forces, whether it’s Shang or Shao Kahn, not even realizing he had a son, Takeda, with a woman named Sachin. Unfortunately, after spending so much time with Special Forces, Kenshi returned too late when Daegon and the Red Dragon killed her. He fled with Takeda and ended up at Hanzo’s home, where Scorpion entered the fray again.

They slaughtered the villains, leading to Kenshi ultimately begging Scorpion to train the boy. Hanzo warned that Kenshi would become consumed by his crusade, and lose his son’s trust. But Kenshi knew abandoning his 8-year-old child would cause Takeda to hate him, and hoped he would use that fury to become an impeccable understudy — one he eventually could take under his own wing to complete their revenge mission.

Hanzo eventually accepted the deal, because he and Kenshi were close, but also, the death of Suchin hit home for him. It began stirring his own demons, which allowed Scorpion to fully return to action. Ironically, he’d meet Kenshi again when Special Forces arrested Quan Chi, as Scorpion never forgave the Necromancer for killing his family and turning him into this monster of ash and brimstone. It even led to conflict with Takeda in Special Forces. But no matter what, Kenshi fought to protect Scorpion, even from his own allies.

Whether it be against Quan Chi’s minions, Shinnok’s monsters or Earthrealm’s heroes, Kenshi owed Hanzo an immortal debt for being a father to Takeda, and no matter what, he’ll always have his back. And Scorpion, who usually is ready to kill anyone and everyone to achieve his goals, does have a soft spot, looking at Kenshi like a brother too. This adds emotion and nuance to their story in a similar manner to his beef with Sub-Zero, who was framed for killing Hanzo’s family, so hopefully we get to see more of them in the wake of Aftermath. They both hold up a mirror to each other, reflecting the monster within the man, and it’s obvious they might be the road to salvation once they learn to let go of the past and live to help Takeda protect the world.
