Mortal Kombat How Shao Kahn Took Over Outworld

The Mortal Kombat franchise’s many years have brought it hundreds of characters and several distinct worlds, and the 2011 reboot even introduced a timeline split to further convolute its deep lore. A large part of what keeps fans engaged is Mortal Kombat’s core, most memorable characters, with faces like Shao Kahn, the ruler of Outworld, serving as anchors in the complicated MK storyline.

Many of the series’ more recognizable characters are heroes like Mortal Kombat tournament-winner Liu Kang, as well as his friends Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. The series does have several iconic villains, though. Shao Kahn was first introduced in Mortal Kombat 2 as the final boss, but he wasn’t always the tyrant players know him as. In fact, there was a time when he wasn’t even in charge of his own realm.

In Mortal Kombat 2’s story Shao Kahn was in charge of Outworld; it wasn’t until the Dragon King Onaga was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance that the series began to tell his full story. This was then explored in more detail over the next few Mortal Kombat games, with the bulk of the tale revealed in Mortal Kombat: Deception, wherein Onaga was the final boss.

How Mortal Kombat’s Shao Kahn Took Outworld From Onaga

At an unknown time in the past, the Mortal Kombat universe was host to a race of dragons. They are thought to be direct descendants of the Elder Gods and to have all lived in Outworld. At some point, they disappeared – except for Onaga, who was able to unite the realm under his banner. Onaga next collected his allies and led them in an all-out attack on the Netherrealm. Eventually, his campaign succeeded, and his forces then moved on to the other realms of Mortal Kombat.

At the same time, Onaga wished for immortality. After existing for so long amongst the mortals, the dragons no longer had immortal life. He hoped to use the blood of an infant dragon to give himself that power. Unfortunately for the Dragon King, his trusted adviser, Shao Kahn, was tired of serving at his side.

Shao Kahn poisoned Onaga and seemingly killed him, allowing Kahn to take over Outworld and become one of the greatest villains in Mortal Kombat history, going on to merge it with other realms like Edenia. Of course, as the games have revealed, Onaga was never fully dead. His return caused several problems for Kahn, though he was eventually able to best his former ruler during the events of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Shao Kahn then retook his place as the ruler of Outworld before the timeline split in Mortal Kombat (2011).
