Ever since All Might mentioned that One For All was a Quirk passed from person to person, My Hero Academia viewers have been incredibly interested to find out who had the legendary Quirk before All Might and Deku. While not much has been revealed about the previous users, the one before All Might has come up for several reasons.
Nana Shimura had One For All before All Might, but otherwise, Deku hasn’t learned much about her. However, the viewers have seen several flashes into the past that have shown her. Despite there only being a few flashbacks involving Nana throughout the series so far, quite a bit of information about her has come to light.
10 Multiple Quirks
One For All is an incredibly powerful Quirk, but that’s not all that Nana Shimura was capable of. She had another Quirk called Float, which allowed her to suspend herself in mid-air.
It’s unknown whether she was capable of actual flight, or if she merely used her increased strength to leap and remain in the air. This is interesting because if All Might’s muscle form isn’t a Quirk on its own, then she would be the last known One For All user to have an additional Quirk.
9 A History With Gran Torino
Gran Torino is an old and well-respected hero who first showed up when he helped train Deku to better utilize his Quirk. It’s quickly revealed that he also trained All Might before he became the number 1 hero.
As it turns out, Gran Torino trained All Might because of a promise he made to Nana Shimura. The two were close friends and allies and worked together to save others. It was only after Nana’s death that Gran Torino fulfilled his promise to her.
8 Passed Down The Smile
One of All Might’s signature trait is his constant smile. No matter how bad the situation, he saved people with a broad smile on his face. Even Deku is beginning to do the same, forcing himself to smile in the face of overwhelming odds.
Nana began this trend and made sure to teach All Might to smile as he saved others. She said that this helped to save a victim’s heart on top of their lives. This simple yet effective style has now affected three generations.
7 Fell To All For One
All For One is the opposite of One For All and allows the user to steal Quirks from others. All For One was an antagonist for each One For All user, and the same held true for Nana. Their final battle also involved Gran Torino and All Might, but it didn’t go well.
In order to save their lives, Nana sacrificed herself and died at All For One’s hands. This only cemented All Might’s hatred for him and led their conflict to become far more personal than past users of One For All.
6 A Broken Family
Nana Shimura wasn’t just a pro hero but a mother and wife as well. While not much has been discussed about her past, what has been shown is tragic. All For One tracked down her husband and killed him, ruining their happy family.
Nana was devastated at the loss of her husband and didn’t want the same fate to fall to her son. She decided to give him away to be raised by others and made Gran Torino and All Might promise never to go searching for him. While this kept him alive, it drove a huge rift between them and he never forgave her for it.
5 A Corrupted Grandson
Tomura Shigaraki, whose real name is Tenko Shimura, is the person that All For One chose as his successor. He is the head of the League of Villains and has shown great interest in Izuku Midoriya. It was revealed that he is Nana Shimura’s grandson, which is a big point of anger for All Might as he feels he failed her.
Tomura being her grandson was a big factor in All For One choosing him as a successor. This is another jab at the dead hero and makes it incredibly personal for both All Might and Deku.
4 Indirectly Created Tomura Shigaraki
As the grandson of Nana Shimura, Tomura Shigaraki’s father, Kotaro Shimura, was the son the hero gave up in order to protect him. This gave Kotaro severe issues, which he then took out by abusing Tenko. This constant abuse eventually led Tenko to snap.
Using his destructive Quirk, Tenko killed his entire family in a fit of vengeance. After these murders, he shed his old name and family and became the villain Tomura Shigaraki. While she could not have foreseen this, Nana is indirectly responsible for his fate.
3 A Very Literal Name
Nana Shimura’s name has two separate meanings that relate to her character in the series. Nana means seven in Japanese, and coincidentally, she was the seventh person to hold One For All.
Additionally, Nana is another way to refer to a grandmother. Tomura Shigaraki is her grandson, so this is particularly fitting. In a way, she is also a grandmother to Deku, as she first passed the Quirk to a “father figure” who passed it to him.
2 The Body Of A One For All User
As shown by Deku’s multiple broken bones, having One For All can take a toll on the user’s body. The user has to be physically strong enough to withstand using the Quirk. Nana Shimura was no exception to this.
Nana was the only female user of One For All, and she trained herself to withstand the toll. She was remarkably muscular, more so than many of the males in the series. In her brief moments on screen, it was emphasized just how strong she had to become and how much work it took to use the Quirk.
1 Seeing The Predecessors
The UA Sports Festival was the first time that Deku saw the past users of One For All. While unique, he wasn’t the first to see them. Nana Shimura also at some point saw a vision of the past users. She told Gran Torino of the vision but didn’t know what to make of it.
It’s possible Nana was the first to be able to see and hear the memories of the past users, similar to the Avatar in Avatar the Last Airbender. This potentially shows that she and Deku are the most in touch with the Quirk and are able to use if more efficiently.
