My Hero Academia Bakugo Just Revealed the Real Reason He Bullied Deku

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Chapter 322 of My Hero Academia!

Many Deku sympathizers haven’t taken to Bakugo Katsuki’s recent shift from bully to begrudging friend, but in the latest chapter of My Hero Academia, Bakugo actually apologizes and even reveals the true reason why he bullied Deku when they were kids.

Although an incredible turn of events, the stunning apology and confession make sense given recent events. Class 1-A has been desperately trying to rein in Deku as he rampages alone across Japan to face All For One. All of Deku’s classmates have failed and just when the last-ditch effort of class 1-A joined their long list of failures, Bakugo tried reasoning with him.

His attempt is quite effective as Bakugo not only apologizes for how he treated Deku but even explains why. Until now, fans understandably believed that, as children, Bakugo bullied Deku mercilessly because Deku was quirkless and yet still desired to be a hero, which was ostensibly impossible. In comparison, Bakugo not only possessed a quirk but one that was especially powerful and flashy. Manga readers undoubtedly came to the conclusion that Bakugo just enjoyed bullying Deku because he was such an easy target. Bakugo’s anger and resentment towards Deku, later on, made complete sense when Deku suddenly acquired All Might’s incredible power and was even accepted into U.A. High. But Bakugo’s confession proves his feelings were much more complex than that.

Bakugo reveals the stunning truth in chapter 322, saying that, despite being miles ahead of Deku in turns of ability, he always felt as though he was behind Deku. Bakugo hated this feeling more than anything and wanted desperately to prove his strength to alleviate his fears, which explains why he was so merciless. But Bakugo still felt as though he lost every time. Deku’s acceptance to U.A. High just confirmed his fears and only made him try harder. Bakugo then concludes his speech by apologizing.

Before now, many fans felt that Bakugo’s complete 180 with Deku was artificial because it transpired around the time he learned that All Might had chosen Deku to be his successor. Additionally, how could Bakugo possibly make up for years of incessant bullying and mental abuse? With this stunning new information, fans might have to reassess their opinion of him. But in truth, it doesn’t excuse his behavior. Acting out due to feelings of inadequacy might be more acceptable than doing so for the sake of enjoyment as many originally thought was the case, but it still doesn’t make what he did any less wrong, nor does it diminish or alleviate the abuse that Deku suffered. Regardless, Deku obviously needed to hear the truth just based on his dumbfounded facial expression throughout the entirety of Bakugo’s speech.

Ironically, these words aren’t enough to dissuade Deku from seeking out All For One alone. What stops him is his body; he collapses out of sheer exhaustion, though he fittingly falls into Bakugo’s outstretched arms. It is possible, however, that Deku loses his will to fight because he finally heard what he always wanted from his old childhood friend: An apology and the truth. Whatever the reason may be, it’s a monumental moment, not just for My Hero Academia, but Deku and Bakugo’s continually evolving relationship.
