My Hero Academia Shoto Todoroki Debuts His Ultimate Super Move

The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 352, “Ultimate Moves” by Kohei Horikoshi, Caleb Cook and John Hunt, available now in English from Viz Media.

Working toward using both the flames on his left side and the ice on his right side has been one of Todoroki Shoto’s main goals in My Hero Academia. He’s become a lot more adept at using his flames since finally accepting them, and his newfound mastery has allowed him to use his Quirk in ways that Endeavor never even fathomed.

After stunning Dabi with Phosphor, Shoto’s own version of the Flashfire super move, he’s debuted a new technique in MHA Chapter 352 — one that’s entirely unique to him. After mastering Flashfire, Shoto set to work practicing how he could incorporate his ice into his father’s signature move and make it more powerful. His breakthrough occurred when he began using his heart to pump alternating streams of hot and cold blood throughout his body. Using this Coldflame technique, he could use the most advanced Flame super moves without overheating or powerful Ice moves without freezing himself. When it’s activated, Shoto’s chest area becomes shrouded in flame that is cool to the touch.

Shoto’s new cooling technique has allowed him to create a new slew of combined ice and fire moves, which he used to pummel Dabi into submission. After unleashing Phosphor, he let loose another blast of his cooling flame in a widespread attack he called the “Icebound Crash – Coldflame’s Pale Blade”. The attack completely snuffed Dabi’s flame out and momentarily stunned the villain, but it wasn’t enough to take him down. Unfortunately, Shoto’s Coldflame had reached its limit at that point.

Just as he was preparing his next attack, it shut off, leaving him defenseless. Dabi wasted no time stabilizing himself and starting his flame anew. He noticed Shoto’s helplessness and, before his brother could collect himself, charged in once again to decide their battle once and for all. In his haste, he’d forgotten about the Flaming Sidekickers who had escorted Shoto to the battle. Endeavor’s sidekicks jumped in front of Shoto right before Dabi’s attack hit and bravely took it in his stead, giving him just enough time to reactivate Coldflame.

As Shoto charged up his Coldflame, he reminisced on his journey at UA so far. He recalled how naive choosing to ignore his Flame Quirk had been, and how that decision slowed his journey toward being a hero. He was grateful for his friends at 1-A who progressed farther yet never abandoned him, instead continuing to encourage him as they waited for him to reach his full potential.

Using the strong emotions he had for his classmates as fuel, Shoto let loose his biggest super-move yet: Great Glacial Aegir. When Coldflame was active once more, he punched Dabi with as much ice as he could muster, finally smothering his brother’s flame out and freezing everything around them for several blocks. This attack seemed to finally knock Dabi out, signifying the end of their battle — but the brothers still have unfinished business. Shoto doesn’t belive Dabi is past redemption, so this might not be the last that My Hero Academia readers see of them.
