According to the description of an upcoming panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Blizzard could be unveiling Overwatch’s newest hero at the event.
Scouring the SDCC schedule for July 21, fans might have noticed a panel with Overwatch developer Blizzard blatantly heralding the game’s newest hero. In “Behind the Scenes of Overwatch’s Newest Hero”, Blizzard intends to discuss the creative process of developing a new character, including art, design and story — without actually mentioning the hero’s name, of course.
What is curious about the description is it makes no mention of an actual announcement of any kind, which begs the question of when the hero will be officially disclosed to the public. Whether it will occur before or during the event is a mystery, but one thing is sure, it will be soon since SDCC is only weeks away and they cannot very well discuss a new hero by glossing over important details, such as who they are actually discussing — that would be confusing.
It was only a matter of time before the next hero was announced. Overwatch is reaching tremendous heights of popularity, making our list of the top games of 2016 so far, and ousting League of Legends from its top position as most-played game in South Korea. Fans love the game and they are craving more.
Blizzard had a feeling they might and the company has been fueling rumors of a new playable hero since the game launched back in May. The company has secretly planted hints all over the game, trailers, and even interviews, encouraging players to figure it all out for themselves, if they can.
Many of these clues are hidden right out in the open in the form of pictures or in-game dialogue that trigger randomly. Those with the time, and patience, to pour through all the available media have found evidence that the next hero will likely be a support in the form of a healer sniper hybrid named Sombra. Blizzard all but confirmed this a few days ago when they released a somewhat cryptic image of the new hero’s weapon, which happens to be a sniper rifle with healing capabilities.
All signs do seem to point to Sombra as Overwatch’s next playable hero, but there is absolutely no clue as to when this hero will be available in-game. Sombra is likely still in heavy development and that creative process is being explained at Comic-Con simply as a way to hype the character for release down the line.
Competitive Play launched this month and the amount of problems a new character would create by being added in the middle of a season would be innumerable. New heroes take tremendous amounts of testing and re-balancing before they join the ranks, so no one should expect to play this new support character any time soon — as if people would actually choose to play support.
Overwatch’s next playable hero might be announced at SDCC 2016 or some time before, but fans can rest assured it will be soon.
Overwatch is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
