No Time To Die Can Include Blofelds Deleted Spectre Cannibalism Backstory

No Time To Die will feature the return of Blofeld, and the movie should revisit an unused origin story for the supervillain. Blofeld was a major part of the Sean Connery era of the James Bond series, with the character first serving as the shadowy mastermind behind SPECTRE whose face was never seen before actors like Donald Pleasence and Telly Savalas brought him to life in later entries. A lawsuit involving the rights to the character prevented him from appearing in the Roger Moore era onwards, though an unnamed version of the villain is killed off by Moore’s Bond in the opening of For Your Eyes Only.

The character was finally brought back to the saga in 2015’s Spectre, which cast the great Christoph Waltz as the new Blofeld. Sadly, the movie’s convoluted attempts to force this take on Blofeld into Bond’s backstory, including making him secretly responsible for the events of Daniel Craig’s previous movies and also being his foster brother, served to undermine his menace. Waltz will get a second chance with Blofeld thanks to No Time To Die, which serves as Craig’s final outing as Bond.

No Time To Die will pit Bond against mysterious new villain Safin (Rami Malek), with who the captured Blofeld seems to have some kind of link. How Blofeld went from being Bond’s foster brother to the head of SPECTRE wasn’t really fleshed out in Spectre, though an early draft featured something of a horrifying backstory explaining the organization’s name, and the lengths he is willing to go to survive.

In this early draft of Spectre, Blofeld’s former associate Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) revealed to Bond that he and Blofeld were part of a French Foreign Legion outfit dubbed “Les Spectres de Pierre”. This unit was apparently into illegal activities, but a defining moment for Blofeld came when he and his men were caught in a sandstorm. With no rations and facing likely death, Blofeld killed everyone – bar Mr. White – in their sleep so he could cannibalize their bodies. He didn’t spare Mr. White out for friendship either; he just needed assistance to haul the food across the desert.

It certainly makes for a memorable origin for SPECTRE’s name and establishes just how ruthless and pragmatic Blofeld is. In the wrong hands, it could be a tad silly or even goofy, so it’s not a huge surprise Spectre director Sam Mendes opted to keep some of his backstory a mystery. That said if No Time To Die wants to add a little more insight into Waltz’s Blofeld – who could use an injection of menace – revisiting this ghoulish backstory might be a good idea for James Bond’s most famous foe.
