Theaters have been using fan-made Spider-Man: No Way Home posters featuring multiple web-slinging heroes. A month and a half since the much-anticipated trailer for the Jon Watts and Tom Holland blockbuster was released, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have yet to release a one-sheet for it. So, cinemas are opting to use unofficial versions to market the project.

Picking up after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker will find himself in a difficult situation after his secret superhero identity has been revealed to the public. To make things worse, he’s also framed for the death of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Backed into a corner, he reaches out to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help, and surprisingly, he agrees to do so. Unfortunately, due to a tampered spell, the pair accidentally opens up Earth to threats of the multiverse. Between this and the appearance of Alred Molina’s Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2, fans are convinced that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the web-slinging hero are involved.

This has inspired countless fan-made content for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and now, some of those posters are actually being used in theaters. Twitter fan account Spider-Man News rounds up some photos of cinemas doing this, and all of them are featuring one-sheets suggesting that other Spider-Men will indeed be in the threequel. As previously mentioned, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment have yet to release an official poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Marketing for the movie started quite late, and normally when a trailer is released, it’s accompanied by a one-sheet. Obviously, that’s not the case with regard to No Way Home. But it’s safe to say that an official poster will eventually be released, perhaps alongside the imminent second trailer. It’s worth noting that both studios have been busy with other projects; Sony Pictures Entertainment has just rolled out Venom: Let There Be Carnage, while Marvel Studios is focused on promoting Eternals. So, understandably, they haven’t had much time to push for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

On the surface, using fan-made posters in cinemas isn’t really harmful. If anything, some unofficial one-sheets look so much better than official versions. But, in the case of Spider-Man: No Way Home, this could create some problems as it’s essentially suggesting that Garfield and Maguire are confirmed to be in the movie, which isn’t the case. Despite the persistent rumors, there hasn’t been any confirmation from the studios that they will indeed be involved in the film. If they turn out to really not be in the threequel, then viewers who are not that well-versed in the state of the MCU could be sorely disappointed.

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
