ObiWan Kenobi F9’s Sung Kang Reportedly Plays an Inquisitor in Star Wars Show

F9’s Sung Kang’s role in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ may be revealed, with the actor reportedly playing an Inquisitor. Kang, who has played Han in multiple installments of the Fast & Furious series, was part of the original casting announcement back in March. The same announcement also revealed that Ewan McGregor was reprising his role as Obi-Wan, alongside Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, as well as Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse returning as Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. The series will also include a number of new faces, including Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, Kumail Nanjiani.

Very little is currently known about the upcoming series aside from that it will be set ten years after Revenge of the Sith and pick up with Obi-Wan watching over a young Luke before he is called away on an adventure. Recent reports claim that Bird Box’s Vivien Lyra Blair has been cast as a young Leia in the series. Moreover, she will reportedly be fundamental in driving Obi-Wan to come out of self-inflicted exile once more; what exactly that entails is still up in the air however.

Further information on the series has since come to light, with Cinelinx reporting that Kang will not only be playing an Inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi but that he will specifically be playing The Fifth Brother, a character that first appeared in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. It had been previously reported that the series would see Obi-Wan squaring off against at least one Inquisitor. This revelation that Kang is playing an Inquisitor further adds credence to the belief that Obi-Wan Kenobi aims to bridge the twenty-year gap between Episode III and Rebels. Screen Rant reached out to Disney for comment, but no response has been forthcoming.

First appearing in Rebels, Inquisitors in the Star Wars canon were former Jedi apprentices turned to the dark-side of the Force through torture and used by the empire to hunt down and execute the remaining Jedi. During Star Wars: Rebels season 2, the Fifth Brother served directly under Darth Vader alongside the Seventh Sister; both were sent to hunt down the show’s heroes, specifically the Jedi Ezra and Kanan. Both were eventually killed in the season finale by Maul, but not without assistance by Ahsoka Tano. Considering that Obi-Wan Kenobi is set around ten years prior to Rebels, audiences will likely be seeing the Fifth Brother serving directly under Vader once again, with Kang recently stating in an interview that he had seen Vader in-costume on set. The question remains whether or not the Seventh Sister will also make a return; if so, it could possibly be Varma’s role.

If the rumors of Kang’s role prove to be true, then it would mark the first appearance of the Inquisitors in a live-action film or series and highlight the potential dangers that Obi-Wan will be facing in the upcoming series. It also raises a number of questions, including how involved they will actually be in the series and how exactly they tie into Leia being the impetus behind the series. Will Obi-Wan be trying to prevent Leia from being kidnapped by the Empire or called to protect her and her family? Hopefully more information will be coming soon, but until then, fans will just have to wait patiently until Obi-Wan Kenobi releases next year.
