ObiWan Kenobi Series Art Shows Hayden Christensens Darth Vader Unmasked

Reported Star Wars concept art from Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series shows Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader unmasked. Christensen made his debut as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and reprised the role in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Episodes II and III outlined the character’s life before turning to the dark side and embracing the sith mantel of Darth Vader, culminating with a showdown with his former master and friend, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), on Mustafar. That fight ended with Anakin losing multiple limbs, being badly burned, and ultimately fitted with the Vader’s iconic cybernetic armor.

During Disney Investor Day 2020, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy officially announced that Christensen would star in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series following the titular Jedi Master’s exile on Tatooine eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. In addition to Christensen and McGregor, the cast includes Maya Erskine, Bonnie Piesse, Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, and Joel Edgerton reprising his role as Owen Lars, the stepbrother of Anakin and guardian of Luke Skywalker—a younger version of him and Leia are also rumored. Being that the role of Vader is a masked role famously voiced by James Earl Jones, it’s been unclear how Christensen will return.

New details on Vader’s role in Kenobi has been reported by Star Wars News Net, along with notes about the villain’s role in the series. The art shows Christensen unmasked and unarmored with his injuries on full show, akin to the bacta tank seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

If audiences don’t get to see Christensen unmasked as Vader during the events of the series, he’ll surely appear in a flashback/vision capacity. It would make sense for Obi-Wan to be tormented by his failure as a mentor, reliving the events of Anakin’s descent in his mind. Hopefully, Christensen won’t just be working with grim material as fans would surely appreciate some endearing moments between Obi-Wan and Anakin to contrast the bad. While McGregor’s work in the prequels was acclaimed almost immediately, common critiques surrounding the trilogy’s writing didn’t do Christensen’s acting any favors. After the release of the sequel trilogy, more and more fans have grown fond of not only George Lucas’ work on the Star Wars prequels, but Christensen’s too.

Fans were elated just to hear Christensen’s voice in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Helmet or no helmet, the fandom and the actor now have a second chance to say goodbye to his version of the character. As has been the case with Disney+’s The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi will likely further bridge the gap between the animations and live-action, adapting material from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and/or Star Wars: Rebels. There are plenty of rumors suggesting characters like Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano and Commander Cody will be appearing in the series. While a premiere date has yet to be announced, production has wrapped on the six-episode series directed by Deborah Chow, so answers will come soon.
