Over the past 20 years, Tom Ellis has slowly but steadily become one of the most visible stars on television. The Welsh native made his acting debut via the 200 TV-movie Kiss Me Kate and has since appeared in well over a dozen American and UK TV series. From 2000 to 2010, Ellis worked on such projects as No Angels, EastEnders, The Passion, Hartley Street, Monday Monday, and others.

In 2010, Ellis began landing bigger roles in higher-profile series such as Merlin, The Fades, Gates, Once Upon a Time, The Flash, and more. Currently starring as Lucifer Morningstar in the hit series Lucifer, he has plenty of great roles to check out.

10 Mark – The Fades (2011) 7.8

Ellis was featured on all seven episodes of the short-lived 2011 horror mystery series The Fades, which co-starred Natalie Dormer and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya.

The concept of the show revolves around a troubled teenager named Paul (Iain De Caestecker), who is tormented by nightmares of an impending apocalypse, in which he can see dead spirits known as The Fades. The spirits cannot be sensed by humans, prompting a vengeful spirit named Polus to inhabit human-form and wreak havoc on Earth. Ellis plays Mark, Paul’s history teacher.

9 Harry Taylor – Waking The Dead (2005) 7.8

While Waking the Dead has the same IMDb-rating as Silent Witness, the two episode-arc that Ellis appears in ranks much higher in the former horror show.

Running for nine seasons and 92 episodes from 2000 to 2011, Waking the Dead is a police detective drama in which a series of grisly cold cases are reopened by skilled Detective Superintendent, Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve). Ellis appears in the two-part Straw Dog episode, a copycat killer recreating a crime spree from 30 years prior.

8 Cenred – Merlin (2008) 7.9

Ellis appeared in four episodes of Merlin during the third season of the show in 2010. For his multi-chapter arc, Ellis portrayed the character of Cenred, the ruler of the Kingdom of Essetir.

Merlin centers on the young titular magician (Colin Morgan) coming of age as he harnesses his superhuman powers. The more Merlins learns, the quicker he becomes Squire to the crown Prince Arthur (Bradley James). In Ellis’s final episode, Merlin and his men must prevent Cenred from obtaining the Cup of Life.

7 Neil McGray – Accused (2010) 8.0

Although he appeared in one episode of the short-lived TV series Accused, “Liam’s Story” is good enough to crack Ellis’s list of top 10 IMDb roles, to date.

Andy Serkis stars as Liam Black, a cab-driver with a crippling gambling habit and an ill, bed-ridden wife. Bereft of cash to buy a house for his daughter as a graduation present, Liam robs a nearby house. But while he’s inside, he becomes obsessed with Emma, the female home-owner, and begins collecting data on her to arrange real-life meet-ups. Ellis plays Emma’s boyfriend, Neil, who Liam proves has a wife and child.

6 Pulling (2006) 8.0

Ellis appeared as a guest-star in the fifth and sixth episodes of the first season of Pulling, a half-hour British sitcom that ran for a total of 13 episodes over three seasons, from 2006 to 2009.

The premise of the series concerns Donna (Sharon Horgan), an office employee who panics when she realizes she’s about to get married without living the single life in full. When she calls off her wedding and moves in with two single besties, hilarious hijinks ensue. As Sam in his two episodes, Ellis plays Donna’s love interest who ultimately rejects her when he discovers her infidelities.

5 Mike – Love Soup (2005) 8.0

Airing on the BBC for 18 episodes over three seasons, from 2005 to 2008, Love Soup is a British rom-com series in which two ideal matches for one another have no clue the other exists. Alice (Tasmin Greig) and Gil (Michael Landes) are a romantic match made in heaven, yet they constantly miss meeting one another.

Ellis only appears in the fifth episode of season 5, in which a young medical student harbors a crush on Alice. Meanwhile, Gil begins to fall for a fellow screenwriter he meets when he’s hired to punch a sitcom script for a failing documentary star.

4 Miranda (2013) 8.1

In one of his longer recurring roles, Ellis appeared in all 20 episodes of the BBC series Miranda, which spanned four seasons from 2009 to 2015. The semi-autobiographical show tracks Miranda (Miranda Hart), a socially awkward comedienne who works in a joke joint with her best friends.

Ellis plays Gary Preston, a dashing chef and former college roommate of Miranda’s. Despite being close friends, an air of romance drifts between them while trading flirtatious banter. Their relationship eventually evolves into marriage by the end of season 3.

3 Lucifer Morningstar – Lucifer (2016 – ) 8.2

Although it ranks third according to IMDb, it’s hard to argue that Lucifer Morningstar isn’t the most important role of Ellis’ career to date. He has not only played the character over 70 episodes and counting, but he’s also reprised it in cross-over episodes of The Flash.

The premise of the show finds Lucifer bored with his time in hell and visiting Earth to learn the folly of humanity. Arriving in Los Angeles, Lucifer Morningstar becomes an LAPD consultant and punishes the wicked in ways only he knows how.

2 Detective Inspector Bland – Poirot (2013) 8.6

Running for 70 episodes from 1989 to 2013, Poirot is currently ranked 168 on IMDb’s list of Top 250 TV Shows ever made. Ellis appeared in one episode during the show’s final season in 2013, entitled Dead Man’s Folly.

When a murder-hunt party game is organized by Miss Oliver (Zoe Wannamaker), things turn sour when the girl portraying the murder victim ends up dead for real. Poirot arrives to investigate, while Ellis plays rival Detective Inspector Bland.

1 Thomas Milligan – Doctor Who (2007) 8.6

According to IMDb, the best role of Tom Ellis’s career, thus far, belongs to his lone appearance on the hit BBC series, Doctor Who. Ellis appeared in Last of the Time Lords, the 13th episode of season 3.

The episode takes place one year after the Master overran Earth and ordered the incursion. With the Doctor and Martha relegated to doing menial tasks, the latter hatches a plot when learning of the Tocalfane’s origins. Ellis plays Thomas Milligan, a doctor who Martha calls on the phone to ensure the destruction of the paradox machine has reverted time back to 2008.
