Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

Activision Blizzard, the developer currently embroiled in a legal battle with the State of California over alleged sexual discrimination in the workplace, has broken its social media silence via the company’s Overwatch accounts for the first time since the lawsuit became public. In an acknowledgment of player demands, the game’s development team has announced that the character of McCree, named after former Blizzard employee Jesse McCree, will be renamed and that an upcoming arc that featured the character will be delayed in order to roll out the adjustments in-game needed to reflect the change.

After the lawsuit was filed by the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), and the allegations made public, Activision Blizzard has been largely silent on social media. Several long-time employees have also been ousted from the company, including Jesse McCree. McCree was not named in the lawsuit but was photographed with Alex Afrasiabi, who was named in the lawsuit and accused of sexually harassing female employees for years with no repercussions. A photograph that included the two in the now-infamous “Bill Cosby suite” prompted immediate furor, and Overwatch players swiftly demanded that all references to McCree in-game be removed.

While references to Afrasiabi in World of Warcraft were quickly removed, because McCree lent his name to a major character in Overwatch, rather than an NPC or minor character that could easily be removed, it was unclear whether Blizzard could implement such a change. But Overwatch developers broke the game’s social media silence today to announce that the gun-slinging cowboy would be getting a name change, in response to player demand. In addition, an upcoming story arc, in which McCree plays a major role, will be delayed. Read the official announcement below:

Removing McCree’s name and all spoken references to it from Overwatch will require a great deal of time, money, and resources. Reaction on social media to the announcement has been positive from both players and Activision Blizzard employees.

The change is an acknowledgment of at least one of the community’s demands, and the fact that it’s being met despite the inevitable costs does speak volumes. It’s unclear whether Activision Blizzard will take additional steps to remove references to those named in or associated with the suit.
