10 Palm Springs (2020)
One of the biggest comedy/fantasy surprises of 2020, Palm Springs is a very enjoyable watch that also happens to contain a knockout soundtrack to complement its sunny visuals and laid-back exterior. Underneath all of the zany happenings, great songs from past decades feature from great ’60s folk-rock artists like ex-Byrds members Gram Parsons and Gene Clark.
John Cale, of The Velvet Underground, has a few songs as well as Kate Bush and Daryl Hall & John Oates. The movie features these tracks in great scenes to help you enjoy them even more.
9 Boogie Nights (1997)
This Paul Thomas Anderson classic about the porn industry in the late ’70s/early ’80s contains a Scorcese-like epic playlist throughout its lengthy running time. Fans of disco, soul, funk, and pop have lots to enjoy here with classic dance-party songs from The Emotions, Hot Chocolate, and KC and the Sunshine Band.
The soundtrack carries listeners from one decade to the next with great ’80s hits – in one of the film’s best scenes – by Rick Springfield and Nena. And who can forget the epic ending with key songs from The Beach Boys and Electric Light Orchestra?
8 T2 Trainspotting (2017)
The soundtrack to the first Trainspotting film is now legendary, introducing an entire generation to artists like Lou Reed, David Bowie, New Order, and more. The second film’s soundtrack follows the same path in featuring classic artists along with great modern ones.
Iggy Pop is again featured along with Queen, Run DMC, and Blondie, and awesome alternative rock and electronica artists such as Fat White Family, Young Fathers, and Wolf Alice also have great songs to enjoy.
7 Batman Forever (1995)
Who would’ve thought one of the least-liked Batman movies of all time would have one of the best soundtracks of the ’90s? Back when movies would release soundtracks containing songs that didn’t even feature in the movie at all, Batman Forever contained an eclectic mix of popular 90s genres, including alternative rock with PJ Harvey, Sunny Day Real Estate, and The Flaming Lips, and pop/R&B with Brandy and Method Man.
There are even neat covers of classic punk icons Iggy Pop and The Damned, the latter being one of the highlights of the soundtrack by The Offspring.
6 Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood (2019)
Quentin Tarantino pulled out his record collection for this endlessly fun soundtrack, reaching for deep cuts from ’60s pop-rock bands like Paul Revere & The Raiders, Neil Diamond, and Los Bravos. A filmmaker who directs scenes around songs, he uses several in key moments in the film, like “Out Of Time” by The Rolling Stones and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” by Vanilla Fudge.
It’s impossible to resist all of those fantastic driving scenes throughout Hollywood in 1969 with songs from Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, and many more.
5 Bronson (2008)
Tom Hardy carries this visually-arresting film from Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, which contains a mixed bag of modern and classic synthy new wave and dark moody tracks. The film opens with “The Electrician” by The Walker Brothers, some of late-singer Scott Walker’s best work, and also features choice cuts from The Pet Shop Boys and New Order.
The end credits also feature the neon-soaked synthwave that director Refn became known for with the song “Digital Versicolor” by Glass Candy.
4 BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Director Spike Lee’s take on the real-life story of an African-American cop who infiltrated the KKK, BlacKkKlansman is a roller coaster of a film with tense drama, madcap comedy, and the perfect soundtrack to match the era. Fans of soul, R&B, and pop will find lots to love here, with great tunes from The Temptations, Looking Glass, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
A great dancing sequence in the film is scored by the infectious track “Too Late To Turn Back Now” by The Cornelious Brothers & Sister Rose.
3 Mid90s (2018)
A heartfelt coming-of-age tale in the titular decade, director Jonah Hill features an awesome mixture of artists to showcase the skateboarding, partying, and dysfunctional home life that the characters experience.
Featuring artists like punk heavyweights The Misfits and Bad Brains, and rap royalty A Tribe Called Quest and Del The Funky Homosapien, the soundtrack also lets its quiet moments shine. “Dedicated To The One I Love” by The Mamas And The Papas is a lovely song featured in a beautifully shot scene.
2 I Melt With You (2011)
Another film soundtrack obsessed with punk and new wave, 2011’s underlooked I Melt With You is a tumultuous watch featuring four friends who recklessly spiral downward into oblivion together while vacationing.
Featuring an endless selection of great bands like The Clash, Death (the protopunk band), Dead Kennedys, The Stone Roses, Bauhaus, The Jesus And The Mary Chain, and many more, fans of these genres have lots to discover. Of course, Modern English’s hit song “I Melt With You” is also featured.
1 Juno (2007)
The 2000s saw indie-pop bands catapult into the mainstream in shows like The O.C. and movies like Juno, in which Elliot Page and Michael Cera star as soon-to-be young parents who are giving their baby to a new couple.
The mix of artists on the soundtrack fits in with the different generations of the characters, with The Moldy Peaches and Belle & Sebastian alongside artists like Buddy Holly, The Kinks, and Mott The Hoople. There’s also a great cover of The Carpenters version of “Superstar” by indie rock pioneers Sonic Youth.
