Peach Momokos Demon Days Continues in Stunning New Chapter Mariko

Peach Momoko’s Japanese-inspired saga is turning the page to its next chapter with Demon Days: Mariko #1, coming in June. Chosen to be a part of Marvel’s Stormbreakers initiative, which aimed to give a platform to up-and-coming creators, Momoko has gotten the chance to bring her Japanese roots to modern comics and reimagine classic characters in a completely new light, first with Demon Days: X-Men #1, and now with Mariko.

This upcoming installment will be part two of a five-part saga that are spaced apart in three-month increments. Although each issue doesn’t necessarily directly connect to its predecessor, they all take place in Japan and are imagined in the same world: one filled with Oni and yōkai, samurais and shamans, and a fluid integration of classic Japanese folklore. In Demon Days: X-Men, readers got to see Wolverine as an actual animal, Psylocke as a sword for hire, Venom as an Orochi, and even Jubilee as a sorcerer, all set against the backdrop of feudal Japan. Now, it’s time to see another character strongly tied to Wolverine, as well as the seedy underbelly of Japanese crime, take center stage.

In the comics, the mainstream Mariko Yashida was both the daughter of Japanese crime lord, as well as one of Wolverine’s love interests. Although known to have died in the main timeline, whether she’s alive or dead varies depending on the storyline and universe. With Demon Days, she is going to get a new adventure inspired by her own heritage. Considering her nationality and backstory in Marvel comics, it’s incredibly fitting for her to have a place in this miniseries anthology. And it looks like her addition is going to be just as visually stunning as its predecessor. Not only that, but Marvel promises it to be a “tale of magic, monsters, and Marvel characters like you’ve never seen them before.” Check out the cover and preview pages below!

There seems to be a good deal of mystery surrounding this upcoming installment and the preview brings up a lot of questions in regards to what’s to come. What is Mariko’s relation to the Oni, the ogre-like spirits of the mountains introduced in Demon Days: X-Men #1? Who is the woman she is seeing in her dreams? Is it truly her mother, and, if so, is she part Oni? How is her maid, who is this world’s version of Black Widow, involved in all of this? And will Mariko find a way to unite with Logan in this universe as well?

All of this is yet to be revealed, and eager readers will have to wait until June 16th until they’re able to get their hands on the book to find the answers to these questions. One thing is for sure though, the artistry that Peach Momoko brings to the pages of these issues is incredible in both concept and content. The world she builds and the way she brings new life and adventures to popular characters is unique, creative, and an overall great nod to Japanese culture and art. It’ll be exciting to see what twists are in store for young Mariko and her fellow Marvel characters, as well as how this alternate story will play out in Demon Days: Mariko #1.
