Persona 5 Mechanics Persona 6 Should Definitely Avoid

Fans of the Persona series have eagerly awaited the release of the next game, Persona 6. The most recent mainline game in the franchise, Persona 5, was released worldwide back in 2017. Four years later, developers at Atlus have shared little information about the next main game and its content.

It would behoove developers to implement some of the features showcased in Persona 5 in the upcoming game; the original was nominated for Game of the Year in 2017, and its enhanced version, Persona 5: Royal, was rated one of the best games of 2020, earned a score of 95 from Metacritic. However, there are some mechanics that would be best left out of a future title.

The first feature better off not used again is the security level mechanic. In each of Persona 5’s main dungeons, there is a value representing how alerted enemies are to the player’s presence. At higher values, players encounter greater numbers of enemies, and at 100% security, players are forced to leave the dungeon and wait another in-game day before they can return. In a game that incentivizes the efficient usage of days, this can be an irritating setback. Still, the mechanic loses much of its impact given how easy it is to lower the security level. While the implementation of security levels was lightly reworked in Persona 5: Royal, a new concept should take its place in the next game.

Persona 6 Shouldn’t Overuse Voice Lines Like In P5

Persona 6 should also avoid its predecessor’s tendency to overuse voice lines in combat. Players are encouraged in Persona 5 to target an enemy with an attack that exploits its weakness, allowing them to attack again. Upon successfully achieving this, the player will receive encouragement from a certain in-game character. Though the spoken quote varies depending on which of the player’s teammates landed the hit, the delivery will be the same for every instance. While this “One More” mechanic is fun and better than many other RPGs’ battle systems, players will often hear the same phrase repeated multiple times per battle, or even per turn, which can become grating.

With the 25th anniversary of the Persona series approaching, it seems possible that Atlus might officially announce Persona 6 soon. While it makes sense to take the most well-received features of a previous title and apply them to a new game, developers should also consider which mechanics need to be reworked or removed. Hopefully, Atlus takes this into account when creating Persona 6, whenever it should come out.
