The original story continues below.

New smartphone app Pikmin Bloom has begun rolling out to iOS and Android devices, introducing what could be another mobile hit for a Nintendo franchise and Niantic. The game comes from the developer of Pokémon GO, meaning hopes are high for the new release which aims to make walking fun with the help of Pikmin companions.

The Pikmin series is one of Nintendo’s more classic franchises, beginning with 2001’s Pikmin for the Nintendo GameCube. The series has expanded with both main entries and spin-offs since its initial launch, with a new numbered title announced back in 2015. While official news on the development of Pikmin 4 has been quiet for some years now, the series saw new life with the release of Pikmin 3 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch in 2020. The family-friendly puzzle games have been a staple for lots of Nintendo fans over the years, and players are hopeful for more Pikmin news for its anniversary.

As revealed by Niantic, the soft launch for Pikmin Bloom has now started, with the app beginning to show up via the Google Play Store and App Store. Pikmin Bloom, developed jointly by Niantic and Nintendo, aims to bring some magic to players’ daily walks, allowing them to forge their own Pikmin squad of companions through walking. Users will be able to see flowers bloom as they walk, with the ability to collect petals, feed their Pikmin, and keep track of their steps and routes. While the app offers less gameplay than the likes of Pokémon GO, users will be able to take part in monthly community events, where they can “stroll, plant and play together with other players.” The free-to-download Pikmin Bloom is available now in Australia and Singapore, with availability in other countries and regions coming in the next few days.

Pikmin Bloom should appeal to daily walkers who might find Pokémon GO too confusing or complex. The new mobile app seems to be targeting the more casual player rather than gaming fans, which could help widen its demographic. As seen in the trailer, the app focuses more on step counting, Pikmin collecting, and making memories with photos and recordings saved through the in-app journal than it does gameplay, with the sole aim of making walking more of an adventure.

While some may be disappointed to see a lack of classic Pikmin gameplay from the app, Niantic’s latest mobile release at least offers something different to Pokémon GO. Other mobile games such as The Witcher: Monster Slayer have tried to emulate the successful Pokémon title with mixed results, and while Pikmin Bloom will offer less gameplay, it does supply a new and unique way to enjoy fitness and walking similar to Pokémon GO. Whether or not the app will be as successful as Pokémon GO remains to be seen, but with Community Days and ongoing support, Pikmin Bloom could be yet another hit for Niantic.
