Good pirate movies are hard to come by, but Pirates of the Caribbean managed to become a hit with its simple formula and brilliant villains like Davy Jones. And who would forget the stunning visuals and the epic and adventurous soundtrack from Hans Zimmer?

That being said, the last movies in the franchise weren’t very good and with a possible sixth film, nobody really knows what to expect. Nevertheless, we can still recall what was great about the films from the start: the characters. Here are Pirates Of The Caribbean Characters Sorted Into Their Hogwarts Houses.

10 Angelica Teach: Ravenclaw

Penelope Cruz was a great addition to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which was probably what made the movie a bit less disastrous. Her portrayal of Angelica Teach, who was based on a character from Tim Powers’ novel On Stranger Tides named Elizabeth Hurwood, by the way, was pretty good and she made the story more lively.

Angelica is a sly woman who knows what she wants and knows how to get what she wants. She has some history with Jack, but she makes sure to always be alert when she has to deal with him. With her fighting skills and a sharp mind, Angelica is a Ravenclaw.

9 Cutler Beckett: Slytherin

Cutler Beckett is one of the biggest threats in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Right when he is introduced in Dead Man’s Chest, we realize just how dangerous Cutler is: he immediately arrests our protagonists and takes over the control of the island.

Cutler is an ambitious man with a past connected to Jack in some way. He knows that the only way he can get to his aim is by manipulating his enemies and making them express their anger on each other rather than attacking him. With such careful manipulations, Cutler becomes one of the smartest Slytherins of the franchise.

8 Edward Teach: Slytherin

Known in his “professional” circles as Blackbeard, Edward Teach is based on a real English pirate who once terrorized the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain’s North American colonies. His legendary ship “Queen Anne’s Revenge” was also shown in On Stranger Tides and both the ship and its captain were pure enjoyment to watch.

Edward is a grim but experienced pirate who is known for terrifying his enemies in battle by lighting the tips of his beard on fire. His status could be compared with that of Davy Jones’ (besides, both of them have connections to the supernatural). To sum up, Edward is a Slytherin.

7 James Norrington: Gryffindor

One of the few noble characters, James Norrington’s character arc could definitely be considered a tragic one. Not only does he start out being in love with Elizabeth who doesn’t return his feelings, but he also ends up dying such a stupid and unnecessary death.

James is a smart commander, even though he does have some failures when he has to deal with Jack. He strives to do what is good and desperately wants to get his place back when he is practically banished. Though he does become bitter with time, James remains a Gryffindor.

6 Davy Jones: Slytherin

Davy Jones is still rightfully considered one of the best villains of the franchise. Bill Nighy did an outstanding job, but what impressed audiences first and foremost was the CGI that still looks extremely good considering it was done over a decade ago (back in 2006).

Davy Jones is a bitter man who doesn’t seem to enjoy anything in the world except for torturing others. He wants to continue ruling his domain, but some people like Cutler Beckett are giving him a hard time. Davy Jones, with his personality and his actions, is a Slytherin.

5 Joshamee Gibbs: Hufflepuff

Joshamee Gibbs might not be the main character, but he certainly does carry a lot of importance and always supports Jack no matter the cost. Perhaps you could say he is the perfect friend for Jack despite all of his flaws (especially the rum drinking problem, but that is a given for many pirates).

Gibbs is undoubtedly a simple man who doesn’t look for anything special in life. He loves going on adventures with Jack, but he does have a strong self-preservation instinct which makes him run away from extremely dangerous situations. He gets along with anyone and everyone, so he is probably a Hufflepuff.

4 Hector Barbossa: Slytherin

Another talented actor and another incredible villain, Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa is just brilliant. A better counterpart to Jack would probably be unimaginable and the two make a great duo to watch as they go back and forth arguing about anything and everything.

Hector is a bit selfish, but he does care about his crew and tries to sustain them and care about them in some way. He even cares about Jack on some level even though Hector was the one who caused the mutiny against Jack in the first place. With all his charm, Hector is a Slytherin who is just as ambitious as Jack.

3 Elizabeth Swann: Ravenclaw

Ever since Keira Knightley appeared in The Curse of the Black Pearl as Elizabeth Swann, millions of viewers have been mesmerized by her beauty. Elizabeth is a great example of a strong female character who is written even better than many modern male characters.

Elizabeth has a strong spirit, but a frail body at the beginning, but she eventually becomes a strong leader in every way possible. She is no worse than her male counterparts and often proves that she can be a very valuable asset (though women in those times couldn’t actually accomplish anything on their own and had limited rights). Elizabeth is a Ravenclaw which is one of the reasons why she befriends Jack so easily.

2 Will Turner: Gryffindor

Will Turner is not the only iconic character Orlando Bloom played (the other one being Legolas from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies). Yet, Will is the protagonist of the first three films even though Jack, a secondary character, often takes the spotlight away from him.

Will is a noble person, just like James Norrington. He was taught to be a good man, but through the process, he learns that being a good man does not necessarily mean being a law-abiding citizen. All in all, Will can’t be anyone else than a Gryffindor.

1 Captain Jack Sparrow: Ravenclaw

Perhaps Johnny Depp’s most iconic character of all time, Captain Jack Sparrow will stay with audiences for ages. Jack is a daring hero who is also extremely appealing which makes him the perfect character to look up to.

Jack is smart and inventive, though it is unclear whether he improvises or plans everything ahead – a question that troubles not only the audience but also some of the characters. But unlike Will, Jack mostly follows only his own interests which doesn’t qualify him to be a Gryffindor – he is a Ravenclaw.
