Screen Rant’s Pitch Meeting series takes on 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, imagining what went down in the early discussions for the film. At the time of On Stranger Tides’ release, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise had completed its initial trilogy and was a bona fide box office success. On Stranger Tides, which holds the record of being the most expensive movie ever made, continued that distinction, grossing over $1.04 million worldwide and beating out third film At World’s End. At the same time, though, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie earned mixed responses form fans and critics.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides picks up a tease left over from At World’s End, with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) embarking on a journey to find the legendary Fountain of Youth. This time around, Jack crosses paths with the fearsome Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz), a past acquaintance. Though Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) from the previous movies appears in On Stranger Tides, this became the first installment to not include fan favorite star-crossed lovers Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).
Screen Rant’s own Ryan George recently tackled At World’s End for the Pitch Meeting series, and now it’s On Stranger Tides’ turn. In this latest installment, George’s screenwriter guy seems to have just one approach to all of the movie’s plot points: Magic, even when it doesn’t quite make sense. Check out the Pitch Meeting down below.
As the series has gone on, Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been criticized for their convoluted plots. On Stranger Tides is no exception; as the Pitch Meeting points out, much of the action hinges on some very specific set of rules regarding how the Fountain works. Overall, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 was met with mixed reviews and earned the franchise its lowest Rotten Tomatoes score at the time: 33%. It didn’t help that the love story was a weak shadow of the epic romance shared by Will and Elizabeth, or that Jack didn’t show much growth in his fourth outing.
Despite the even more lukewarm response to 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disney is currently attempting to chart a new path forward for the lucrative franchise. A potential Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is in development, as well as a female-centered reboot with Margot Robbie. Right now, it remains to be seen which project could move forward first, and only time will tell if it can surpass On Stranger Tides’ hefty box office total.
