Pokemon has a habit of introducing new evolutions for older Pokemon in new generations. One example is Porygon, who obtained a second evolution in generation 2’s Pokemon Gold/Silver. Then, when Pokemon Diamond/Pearl was announced, Porygon2 could evolve into Porygon-Z. Fortunately for some trainers, the methods of evolving Porygon and Porygon2 haven’t changed over the years. Those familiar with the Porygon-line will know that to get Porygon2 and Porygon-Z in the recent Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl, they will need to trade with another player.

Before evolving, Porygon’s stats aren’t too impressive at a base 395. However, like some Normal-type, it can learn various moves that give it coverage. Once evolved into Porygon2 or Porygon-Z, it becomes much stronger and is more than capable of pulling its weight. Players will need the Upgrade and Dubious Disc items to evolve Porygon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Where to Get and Evolve Porygon

Trainers hoping to have Porygon before taking on the Elite Four will be disappointed to hear that Porygon can’t be caught until Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s postgame. Players will have their first chance at catching Porygon after they have obtained the National Dex from Professor Rowan. This allows players to see and catch most of the Pokemon that come from the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn regions.

With the National Dex in hand, go to the Pokemon Mansion on Route 212. With new Pokemon available, speak to the mansion’s owner, Mr. Backlot. He can be found on the east side of the mansion.

Porygon is a Daily Pokemon that will occasionally appear in the Trophy Garden. This means it will only appear if Mr. Backlot claims to have seen it. A surefire way of spawning Porygon is to save before speaking to Mr. Backlot. If he makes no mention of Porygon, reload the save file. Once Porygon is confirmed, head towards the back of the Pokemon Mansion and into the Trophy Garden. In the wild, Porygon is relatively weak, being at level 16, so be careful not to knock it out when trying to catch it.

After Porygon is caught, there are still two more things players need to do.

Upgrade & Dubious Disc

Porygon is a Pokemon that evolves through trade, but if it’s not holding a certain item, then it won’t evolve. While players shouldn’t really give it an Everstone before trading, Porygon needs to be holding the Upgrade item before initiating the trade. This will allow it to evolve into Porygon2.

To get the Upgrade, players need to travel to Eterna City and head into the southwest house in the corner. Here, they will run into Professor Oak, who will give them the Upgrade item, as long as players have the National Dex. If this doesn’t event doesn’t trigger, visit Ramanas Park first (once it’s completed) and then go to Eterna City to speak to Professor Oak. Another way to get the Upgrade is to spend 5 BP at the Battle Tower.

To evolve Porygon2 into Porygon-Z, players need the Dubious Disc. Go to Route 225, and there will be a house somewhere in the middle of the route. Climb the stairs leading up the mountain, go through the tall grass, and use HM Surf. To the upper left of this body of water is the other side of the cliff that players can walk along. Go down the next set of stairs, and the Dubious Disc should be right there.

With all of this completed, give Porygon the Upgrade and trade it to another player. Get it back, give Porygon2 the Dubious Disc, then trade it once more, so it evolves into Porygon-Z. Always remember to get Porygon-Z back from the person it was traded to so the hard work doesn’t go to waste. It’s recommended to trade with someone trustworthy (like a friend) to avoid Pokemon Trade scams.

Players may be quick to want to evolve their Porygon2 into Porygon-Z, but Porygon2 can make a decent sweeper if it’s given the right items, moveset, and has a decent Nature and Ability.

Porygon2 has a base stat of 515. Here’s what its stats-spread looks like:

The best Natures that will capitalize on Porygon2’s Special Attack, Defense, or Special Defense are Modest (+Sp. Attk, -Attk) or Calm (+Sp. Def, -Attk). Avoid it having a Nature that will hinder its Special Attack since Porygon2’s Attack stat isn’t too good.

Porygon2’s Abilities are Trace or Download, with Analytic as its Hidden Ability. To get Analytic, players need to catch a Porygon with its Hidden Ability. Meaning it’s likely Porygon2 will have either Trace or Download.

Since Porygon2 can learn many different moves from TMs, it can have a lot of coverage in battle. Have it hold an Eviolite to increase its Defense and Special Defense. This is a special item that only works on Pokemon that can still evolve. Meaning Porygon2 can benefit from holding the Eviolite, while Porygon-Z cannot.

More Information About Porygon-Z

Trainers looking to go the extra mile and get Porygon-Z will also find that it can be a good sweeper in battle if used properly.

Porygon-Z has a base state of 535 and shares the same Abilities as Porygon2 except for one. Porygon-Z may have Adaptability, which boosts the power of moves that are the same type as the Pokemon using them. Meaning Porygon-Z will deal more damage if it uses a Normal-type move.

Like Porygon2, Porygon-Z’s Special Attack is its best stat, so a Modest Nature is highly recommended. Unfortunately, its Defense and Special Defense is lower, but its Speed is a little higher. This means players could make use of a Porygon-Z with a Timid (+Spd, -Attk) if they can’t get a Nature that boosts Special Attack.

The best moveset for Porygon-Z takes advantage of its versatility. Teach it moves like Ice Beam or Thunderbolt to give it coverage. If Porygon-Z has Conversion, this move allows it to change its Typing to match the original type of the Move in its first move slot. For example: Paired with the Adaptability Ability, Porygon-Z could use Conversion to make it an Electric or Ice-type and dish out more damage from the Thunderbolt or Ice Beam move.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available on Nintendo Switch.
