Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearls Postgame Sounds Brutal

Initial concerns over the difficulty in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl appear to be fading away as details of the postgame emerge. Many players have wanted a more difficult Pokémon game and they may be getting their wish. The long-awaited remakes feature incredibly punishing Gym Leader and Elite 4 rematches following the conclusion of the main story.

Arguably the biggest complaint fans have had with recent Pokémon titles has been a decreasing level of difficulty. As the games have gotten easier, it’s become much harder to maintain interest in a given playthrough for a variety of reasons. Players have found that their teams become quickly over-leveled as the Exp. Share has become an increasingly more broken item with each generation, Gym Leaders have gotten significantly easier and the games have generally taken a much friendlier approach contextually as rivals have transformed into friends who are just happy to battle every once in a while. For many veterans, Pokémon has started to become a much more casual experience that lacks any form of a real challenge.

Many players were concerned about the difficulty level in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl upon learning that the permanent Exp. Share would be returning. And this concern was compounded by the perception that the remakes would be too faithful to their original versions. While players think very fondly of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, the love for the franchise’s fourth generation really comes from Pokémon Platinum, which corrected almost all of the flaws found in the original games and resulted in a much more well-rounded and challenging Pokémon experience. So it wasn’t a surprise that players initially reacted very negatively when it was discovered that those changes weren’t going to be in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, but that sentiment is rapidly changing as players have discovered details of the postgame.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s Postgame Rematches Are Really Hard

As it turns out, players who have gotten their hands on Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl early have discovered that the postgame content is surprisingly brutal. After completing the game, players are able to challenge Gym Leaders and the Elite 4 to rematches like in previous Pokémon titles. Except this time around, all of these battles are against teams consisting of six high-level Pokémon using competitive movesets with maxed-out EVs and IVs.

Players will encounter all sorts of challenges like weather teams, unpredictable movesets, powerful items, and legitimately terrifying offensive threats like a Guts-boosted Heracross with Facade or a Dragon Dancing Gyarados. Each of Sinnoh’s best trainers is equipped with extremely formidable teams that feature unique strategies and will undoubtedly put the player’s knowledge of the game to the test. Players seeking a challenge outside of manufactured Pokémon rules are about to get one, as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl feature some of the most difficult trainer battles of any Pokémon game.

The good news here is that players are finally getting the challenge they’ve been begging for. Whether players are left satisfied with the heavily anticipated fourth-generation remakes remains to be seen, but it certainly looks like ILCA made a real effort to deliver an experience that would be satisfying and nostalgic for fans who cherished this era of Pokémon. Unfortunately, players will be left to their own imagination wondering just how brutal Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl could have been with Mega Evolution thrown into the mix. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
