Pokémon Did Ash Ever Meet Jimmy or Marina
Pokémon: Did Ash Ever Meet Jimmy or Marina?
Jimmy and Marina are among the few Pokémon game protagonists to appear in the anime, so maybe there’s a chance for them to meet up with Ash.

It’s rare for Ash to interact with the protagonists of the game. The male characters almost never show up, let alone introduce themselves to Ash. As for the female protagonists, less than half of them have traveled with Ash between the current eight regions. In most cases, these protagonists either make brief cameo appearances or never show up at all.
Then there’s the case of Jimmy and Marina. These two are based on the protagonists of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Despite never traveling with Ash, they make prominent appearances as the main characters of the made-for-TV movie, “The Legend of Thunder!” Since they’re canon to the anime, perhaps there’s a point where they and Ash somehow crossed paths.
One possible point where Ash and co. may have indirectly interacted with Jimmy and Marina’s Pokémon is in Episode 1 of The Johto Journeys, “Don’t Touch That ‘dile.” In this episode, Professor Elm is taking care of a Cyndaquil and a Totodile to new trainers the next day; the Totodile, in particular, is said to be going to a female trainer. Since Marina and Jimmy started with a Totodile and Cyndaquil, respectively, one might conclude that the starter Pokémon from “Don’t Touch That ‘dile” are the same ones they got.
Unfortunately, the timeline doesn’t match up well enough for this to work. Apparently, they competed in the Silver Conference one year before the one Ash competed in. This likely means that they got their starters and went on a Pokémon journey well before Ash ever met Professor Elm.
With that said, there are people Ash has met on his journey who have also met Jimmy and Marina. Besides Professor Elm, they also met Eusine, another researcher who specializes in Legendary Pokémon. He met Ash in Episode 227, “For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!” and eventually met Jimmy and Marina in “The Legend of Thunder!” However, since “The Legend of Thunder!” likely took place after Episode 227, this is hard to count.
There’s also Vincent, the boy who received Chikorita at around the same time Jimmy and Marina received Cyndaquil and Totodile. He battled Ash at the Silver Conference in Episode 268, “Tie One On!” The dub refers to him as Jackson, but he’s supposed to be Vincent. He also refers to Jimmy and Marina in the original Japanese version of the episode, though the lines are replaced in the dub.
Jimmy doesn’t really make any appearances beyond this point, but Marina does. She appears in the opening of Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. She also appears in pictures in Episodes 476 and 528. She is also featured in a web video in Episode 507, “A Stand-Up Sit-Down!” In this episode, it’s revealed that Marina has evolved her Croconaw into Feraligatr and become a Top Coordinator. Ash watched the video, but this is far from a formal introduction to the character.
It’s important to note that Ethan and Lyra, the protagonists of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, are treated as separate entities from Jimmy and Marina. Ethan battled Ash in the opening of Zoroark: Master of Illusions. Since his name is distinctly different from Jimmy’s in both the Japanese and English dubs, they are likely meant to be seen as different people.
Lyra, meanwhile, met Ash’s group in Episode 609, “An Egg Scramble!” She would go on to travel with Ash and co. until Episode 613, “Bagged Then Tagged!” She hasn’t appeared in the anime since then
It’s easy enough to assume that Lyra and Marina are both based on Kris, the female protagonist introduced in Pokémon Crystal. Even the Pokémon Adventures manga makes this connection and simply has their version of Kris get dressed in Lyra’s clothes. However, the anime treats these girls as two different people.
As things stand, Ash has yet to be formally introduced to either Jimmy or Marina. He may have seen the latter in a few places and met some of their friends, but he still doesn’t know either of them personally. Considering how long it’s been since either of them appeared, it seems unlikely that Ash will be meeting them any time soon.
