Pokémon GO Announces Oshawott For September 2021 Community Day

Niantic will be featuring the water Pokémon Oshawott as part of the upcoming Pokémon GO Community Day in September. The sea otter-themed Pokémon will be featured for a short period of time during this special event, giving players more opportunities to catch it. Pokémon GO hosts several of these in-game special events each year, with a notable recent example being the recent Ultra Unlock 2021 event.

Pokémon GO has been a staple in the AR gaming landscape, maintaining its popularity through regular updates and limited-time gameplay incentives. The latter often includes the chance to catch rare or beloved Pokémon that would otherwise be unavailable or difficult to come across. Developer Niantic also regularly issues special bonuses like boosted XP opportunities and discounts on items featured in the game’s marketplace. In the case of the game’s once-a-month Community Days, specific Pokémon will appear more frequently. The featured Pokémon can also gain access to special abilities and exclusive powers during these events.

Following Eevee’s stint as a featured Community Day Pokémon, Oshawott will take over for the month of September, according to a recent update from Niantic. The water-type Pokémon will be easier to catch from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 19. On top of this, Shiny versions of Oshawott will become available, and players can teach Samurott (the evolved form of Oshawott) the Charged Attack Razor Shell and Charged Attack Hydro Cannon abilities during this timeframe. The event will also include an assortment of other special perks and bonuses, including extra XP-earning opportunities and Easter eggs.

This should come as welcome news for any fans of Oshawott, but some players may still have their minds preoccupied with the recent controversy surrounding the AR experience. Earlier this month, Pokémon GO players began boycotting the game in protest of the recent removal of bonuses, which were originally implemented to enable social distancing and minimize the spread of COVID-19. Taking this into consideration, continuing to host special events that could potentially bring players into close proximity with one another may not be advisable. In response to the boycott, Niantic is holding an internal investigation on ways to keep the game safe.

Despite the controversy surrounding Pokémon GO and public health, Niantic is certainly not stepping back from its popular title. These monthly Community Day events serve as reminders that the game still has a passionate and engaged fanbase since its 2016 launch, even amid a pandemic. To ensure the safety of its players, though, Pokémon GO should take health guidelines into account through the September Community Day and beyond.
